1998 Jag XJ8 will no crank
This is a strange one
The car was parked about 3 hours
never a problem starting before
I drove for 10 minutes, but 35 mph, the engine stalled
pulled over, put the car in park , tried to re-start
no crank , no start, no click , nothing
All dash, radio, a/c and head lights working
Fuel tank 1/2 full
I checked all fuses ok
Battery full charge
Changed oil about a month ago
when I turn key to "ON" I get these codes:
transmission fault, engine fault & electrical fault

There is an engine - to - frame ground cable on the right side sort of behind the front passenger wheel. I know that is a vague location description, but it is fairly easy to find once you are under the car.
Mine was corroded but I wasn't experiencing any symptoms yet; I went ahead and replaced it. It's probably worth checking and cheap to replace.
Edit: Mine is an XJR, but I suspect your car would have the same ground cable location.

Hi from what you are saying is looks like it may be the ECM as that controls not only the fuel pump and ignition but also the starter signal.

Thanks Cybercg
I rented the portable Code Reader from Auto Zone
I get a "Communication Error" message after several attempts
May have to use a high powered code reader

Problem solved !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!1
it was the inertia switch
i worked for hours on fuses not getting voltage
followed schematic to the inertia switch
finally found it - pushed button - engine started
now i need to determine what tripped it

I couldn't believe it
I talked with several repair shops that were familiar with Jags
No one talked about the inertia switch
A great money maker for them
It took me 5 minutes to remove the front seat passenger kick panel
( adjacent to passenger right foot ) and push the button
anyone interested in the details of determining the switch let me know
I'm having a great day (smile)

I have a 2002 Vanden Plas that has very similar symptoms. It has no communications with the CAN reader and shows transmission fault along with low brake fluid (it's not low) and low coolant (once again not low) and ASC fault etc etc. I'll check the inertia switch. When I worked for the British Leyland dealer a long time ago, many MGB's were towed in that just stopped running. Upon questioning the owners ,most admitted hitting a large pothole before the car died about a quarter of a mile down the road.
His Jag should have stopped running if a large pothole caused the inertia switch to quit. More likely, I think, somebody backed into the car, leading the switch to think it was in an accident.
Still, lots of time and money could have been saved by carefully reading the Drivers Handbook where the inertia switch is discussed in some detail.
(MG problems were lousy electrical connectors -- Lucas, Prince of Darkness!).

I checked the inertia switch and it was not tripped. Somebody before me had already checked as the kick panel was already removed. I bought this car at an auction so I don't now about previous work . All of my other cars from that era will let me take the car out of park without the engine running and key on and foot on the brake. This one just makes a string of beeps when the ignition is turned on. I turned the engine over by bypassing the relay and heard what I think was the fuel pump but there was no ignition with the key on. Anyway, it sounds like I bought a parts car which is fine. I would like to hear the engine run if anyone knows how to make that happen.
Sorry Jhartz
I was never in an accident
There was no major pothole, I don't recall any substantial
potholes , I travel this same route for years.
The owners manual does not recommend checking the Inertia Switch if the car
stalls while driving 35 mph ( smile), fortunately there was no money
spent just a learning experience with fuses and voltage checks
Still it's a great item to check or recommend when others ask for "No Crank" help (smile)
