HEllo,
I just purchased my first Jaguar, 1998 XJ8 with 132K. AFter a week of driving it around town the belt tensioner has gone bad. squeek city. It is awefully cold here this week in the Midwest. I am hoping someone can point me to a good source to get a replacement. Ive been to Rock auto and partswharehouse, etc. I am a little confused as some places do not show a tensioner for the XJ8 but for the XJR. Do they use the same tensioner? A total newbie question I know. ANythoughts on the goodyear tensioner?

Thanks Rob. I found the pulley locally. I'm still need the of the tensioner though. Does gates make a tensioner? Any numbers would be great. Thx

 

Sorry I didn't read carefully enough. Do a search of this forum, the answer is out there somewhere.

 

I guess all Im really asking is if the 1998 XJ8 and XJR use the same tensioner. Its the same engine. I find lots of XJR tensioners on the internet.

The Parts Catalogue lists the same Drive Belt Tensioner for both N/A and S/C:



NOTE there's different Tensioners for metal or plastic pulleys.

Thanks! I was thinking they had to be the same. I didnt want to end up with a part that didnt fit. Wanna get this beauty back on the road.
Where did you pull that parts catalogue from. That would be useful.

Jason, did you find this part? Mine decided to pack it in. It looks like the pulley can be changed separately.

 

I replaced the idler pulley, the drive belt tensioner, and the belt. Super quiet now. I bought the idler pulley locally, the tensioner and belt from a parts house on ebay.
I beleive you could replace just the pulley on the tensioner. But I fet replacing everything was the way to go.

I used a Gates 38028, like the idler, but had to use a washer under the factory washer to make it clear the pulley. Works great.
