1998 XJ8 - Transmission shift issue, stuck in Park
Hi Guys,
Found this site from the good old Google.
I've got a 1998 XJ8 that I'm working on as a bit of a fixer upper. The car has a fault where if the shift lever is pushed into Park it won't let the car start, it'll go to 2nd stage on the ignition but no crank. If I manually unlock the shifter and move it to N the car starts and operates just fine (beside moaning at me because I'm leaving the car out of Park).
Any ideas on what that could be?
Thanks for your help!
James

The simple answer might work here. Have some one press the brake pedal with the ignition in the on position. Do the brake lights come on? If they don't then the brake lite switch is bad and it isn't telling the park solenoid that you have your foot on the brake and are ready to start.
Since the vehicle will start in neutral it is and interlock problem. If this isn't the solution get back to me and we can explore the interlock connection in the column and the J-Gate. I really don't think it is ignition.

Along w/ what's stated above I had mine that would not physically shift past neutral. Turned out I had a stripped screw inside the shifter module/mechanism come loose & was sticking out enough to stop the shifter rotation.
