Default 1999 XJ8 Oil Change

OK Guys

Weird one for me. Went to change the oil on my 99 XJ8, 4.0l. Removed the oil plug and..... Less than a litre of oil drians out? Pull the dip stick, shows 3/4 full, still in the operating range. What the heck am I missing? Not a newbe at repair of vehicles, but this is a new one on me.

Hmmm....time to remove the oil pan. There may be plastic debris blocking the drain opening. If its plastic, it is from chain tensioners and guides....this could be a lucky break that you got a warning before broken tensioners destroy your engine.

Possibly you removed the transmission fill plug and not the engine sump drain plug. If so, you need to put that litre of oil back in before driving.

Further question. Is the pan sealed with a paper gasket? Reuseable gasket or just plain old silicone from a tube?

Want to have a gasket at the ready when I drop the pan.

Thanks for the help Guys.

Default Luckest SOB Alive!?

OK, SO I drop the pan with fear and trepidation. Expecting the worst. I find out that some capital A, ***, was in the engine before me. I found a piece of shop towel stuck, partially blocking the oil pan drain hole FROM THE INSIDE!... Ok, so no damage as I have great oil presure. I am guessing somebody may at sometime used a small piece of towel to stop a drip while the plug was out ( I would never fathom why?) and then proceeded to install the plug again, pushing the rag further in.

Still lucky not to have had any resulting damage.

Thats great news!

However, if you have not done your secondary tensioners, you would be well advised to get that done. At 15 years old, I can almost guarantee that they are cracked.

Well Openroad....that has to be a first ;o)=)
What in hell would posess someone to do that??
I immagine all kinds of horrors.
Did the oil pan show any signd of disturbance before you removed it?
It beggars the question of what else has been done to this engine....or hasn't been ;o]
I think it warrants a complete inspection pronto!

One CLASS A Inspection coming UP! I really wish there was some way to inspect those Tensioners to verify they have in fact been changed out. If anyone has an idea please reply. On the same note can anyone recommend, any I know we have suppliers registered, a supplier for the tensioners and gaskets that would be needed for this job. Is nice to get advice from other Jag guys about venders who have good parts as well as good servive knowledge. My local if you can call it that, ( 600 miles away) can not even get off their posteriors to make a sale to me. 2 weeks ago I called to order lower front wishbone bushings, sway bar buchings and links. Still nothing. But the parts have already been ordered and arrived from RockAuto. That reminds me, I also asked mu local Jag dealer to cut me a key. Since he obviously does not need the business, any one able to supply me a key? OK, enough rambling from me.

Hello Norris,
Easiest way to check tensioners is with the cam covers off ;o]
Pity you never checked them while you had them off before.
Use a small bright light like those little LED torches, they'rte brilliant...sic ;o]P
And a small mirror to see reverse side...if slipper face is missing, there will be ctrackes for sure in the plastic body which will look a dark burnt orange for the Mk1's and a lighter yellow colour for Mk11 plastics.
The Mk111's are metal bodied and have a bigger 'wrap around' of tensioner slipper plastioc.
It's quite easy to check primary tensioners and slipper blades while you'r in there.
Personally, I have had dealing with Welsh Enterprises XK's Unlimited and lately i have found sterling srevice from Christophere's Foreign Car Parts:

I bought mine for $149 from Christophers. But, I am going to suggest that they have already been repaired. Most of the online instructions tell the mechanics to put a rag in the left Bank just forward of the cam sprockets (One instruction even reminds everybody to pull othe rag out before you close up the engine). I am guessing that the mechanic replaced the tensioners forgot to take the rag out, vacuum would then suck the rag down to the sump.
