Default 2001 Jaguar XJ8 VDP gearbox fault p1722 p0732

I have to go up to 1500 rpms for it to even kick into gear and then I get these error codes. I did a battery test with my code reader and it read 12 volts not running. Could it be a bad battery? I can do an alternator test too. Any suggestions? Its hurts me to see these codes

Get the battery tested for sure, it never hurts on these cars to have that done when getting suspicious codes. Be sure to check your cables also, ...absolutely no corrosion should be present, because if you see a little on the wiring, there will be more down inside the shielding ...and don't think you can get it out, just buy a new cable.
Your getting the 732 from the Stall Converter effect you have with it slamming into gear (so one issue is causing the other). Which, for simplicity and cost, I would hope to be either low fluid or a possible clogged trans filter, ...so a proper drain and fill wouldn't hurt.
For the more expensive possible issue that involves the 1722, and more likely issue, read this link on the A drum... JagRepair.com - Jaguar Repair Information Resource

With engine running you must have at least 14 V

Battery and alternator is good. Any other suggestions? I was thinking about checking the trans fluid but dont really know how. I'm also thinking about taking it to a trans shop to get it checked out. I had the fluid changed a few weeks ago, maybe they did something wrong

I had a new gearbox put in and all I got was more problems.

First you try to drain gearbox and put new fresh oil in. Filled for life is a damned joke, ALL oils and fluids have a limited life.

I thought the VDP had a 5HP24 transmission.

You are absolutely correct RJ, thank you for correcting me, his is an NA and mine is a SC (which has the Merc). The filler plug is on the side for the 5HP24. This doesn't sound like a fun procedure?

  • A) Transmissions fluid level checking.
1) The transmission fluid temperature must be between 30°C and 35°C before checking can begin. Use test equipment to determine the trans temperature.2) The vehicle must be level with engine running at idle speed and air conditioning turned on.3) Step on the brakes firmly, apply parking brake fully and shift to D and R, briefly pausing in each position before shifting back to the Park position.4) With the engine running at idle speed and the selector in Park position, remove the filler plug. Monitor the transmission temperature, if a small stream of oil runs out at 40°C, the fluid level is correct.5) If no oil runs out when the filler plug is removed, the fluid level is too low and oil needs to be added until it overflows.6) With engine running, install the oil filler plug and tighten to proper torque.
  • B) Adding fluid after repairs.
1) With the engine stopped and the transmission in Park position, remove the oil filler plug. Add transmission fluid until a small stream of oil runs out.2) Insert the filler plug and tighten by hand. Start the engine.3) With the engine running, remove the oil filler plug and add transmission fluid until a small stream of oil runs out. Insert the filler plug and tighten by hand.4) Follow the “Transmission fluid level checking” procedure described in section A) above.
  • C) Notes on fluid level and adding procedure.
1) Use only ZF-LifeguardFluid5 or OEM approved transmission fluid.2) If the transmission temperature rises above 50°C during the fluid level checking procedure the resulting oil level will be to low. Let the transmission cool down and repeat the fluid level procedure.3) Have transmission fluid and a suitable oil pump available before starting the fluid level procedure. The transmission fluid temperature will rise quickly during the checking procedure.

If the fluid level is good I would suspect A drum failing.
