Hi Jeff,

I merged your most recent post with your existing thread - no need to start a new thread just for torque specs.

I believe you will find the tightening torque specifications you need on pdf pages 29 and 30 of the manual I am attaching below.

Cheers,

Don

Hello Jaguar Guys,

Thx for the previous support. Before installing this transmission for the third time and destroying a trans oil pump again, I want to have the converter PROPERLY mounted on the trans.

The manual item 6, above, says that the mounting bosses should be 8mm "proud" of the trans flange. Does "proud" mean protruding or standing above??? Can any non yankee English speaker confirm?

Like you guys described, after an hour of jiggling, turning, it made three "chunk" sounds and settled down to the level depicted in the photo. (taken at flange level, improvised handles, a bolts, in a mounting bosses) It's 8 or 9 mm protruding above the trans mounting flange.

What do you guys think? Am I good to go?

That looks good.

If you took a straight edge ruler flat across the bell housing and measured how far above its contact edge that the bosses were that is what "proud" means.

As you put in and tighten the housing bolts make sure you can rotate the torque converter by hand thru the inspection hole every so often.

Success!! Thanks for the technical support. I installed the torque converter on the trans and trans on the vehicle per your suggestions. I continually checked and confirmed free movement of the TC as I tightened the trans to engine bolts. It spun freely and there was about a quarter inch of front to rear movement. I did not want to destroy another trans fluid pump and have to do the entire job again as I did before. I refilled the trans as suggested, It only took one and a half quarts.

I paid 750 dollars for the car.( 2001 xj8 , 71000 miles) and 450 for the used transmission. Now I have two XJ8's one silver one gold.

Thanks again for the help.

3L80 is a cool way of saying TH400

They quit using the BW in the 70s.
