Default 2002 VDP Intermittent Idle Engine Tick & ~2,500rpm Rattle

I noticed this last weekend when I moved the car out of the shop. It will start fine without any rattling noise, but during its idling, it will rhythmically tick louder than typical running noise, 8-12 ticks, then stop for 10-15 seconds, then back to the 8-10 ticks and so on.

I revved the motor to around 2500rpm and I'm certain I heard a rattle.

The car has been parked since last weekend, but I need to move it out of my shop again so I can continue my closet shelving project. I'll take a video of this when I move the car this morning.

What says the collective? Is it time for a timing system overhaul?

2002 VDP 81,800 miles.

Just uploaded a couple videos on YouTube

My wife just told me this has been getting progressively worse over the past couple of months. What is that ticking? Timing chain tensioners?

Sounds pretty normal to me ;o)
You would get a better idea of where the sound is coming from with the bonett/hood open ;o)
It fairly rythmical and sounds like valve clatter.
Let's have a few facts:
How many miles has it done?
When was the last oil; change done and what grad?
I listeded a couple of times and could not detect any timing tensioner noises which will happen in the first few seconds after start up.
The AJ27 model and especially the later versions like yours will have all the upgrades fitted.
There didn't sound like any serpentine belt pulley noises or rattles either.
When was the last time this beauty went for a long run?
You should be using high quality 5W40 or 10W50 grade oil.
Also the use of a PTFE additive is strongly reccomended and will quieten down the engine remarkably.
Frankly, to me, it sounded completely normal ;o)

I'll take another video today, but with the hood up. It sounds louder when under load - driving it slowly in the driveway. Actually, that last video is the most ticking I've heard it do thus far. Usually it was spotty w/ 8-10 ticks, but now it's more prolonged.

The car did not do this when I first bought it with 78,500 miles on the ODO. It has 81,800 miles on the ODO now. I changed the oil ~250 miles ago and used Rotella 15W40 oil. It has been in the mid to upper 90s and even the low 100s here all summer. My wife told me it started the tick 2-3 months ago, well before the oil change.

We run Chevron 91 octane exclusively, so I don't believe it's a fuel issue.

Honestly, we've never gone on a long drive in the car. Probably nothing over 60 miles in one day. My wife uses the car and hauls our son into town (grocery getter) instead of using the '00 F350 PSD CCLB.

I checked the car's full service history. It hasn't had the tensioners done and it doesn't appear to have the spark plugs changed. I believe I confirmed the car is an early '02.

New video:

Cold start at 72*F ambient. Start sounds good, but the tick starts at 00:54. It sounds like it's on the driver's side, but when filmed from the passenger side, it almost sounds like a knock at 01:49. Two revs at 02:18 - 02:23. Under load, reverse, at 3:13, then back into the shop.
In the 90*F+ heat yesterday, the tick was worse under load. I'll try to get another video today when it's hot.

You need to pull the cam covers (especially on the left side) and check the tensioners -- pay close attention to the plastic "shoes" the chain rides on.

New plugs, properly torqued, wouldn't hurt.

What is the idle speed once the thermostat opens? Sounds fast.

Is this the typical tick that the timing tensioners cause?

I'll order plugs this week.

I don't believe the t-stat opened in the 3-4 minutes it ran. I've always thought it idled high when in park and then when you put it in drive, the idle drops and it feels like it's pulling hard.

Wow, it's been a long time since my last post in this thread. My career literally skyrocketed with a major promotion, so I've been busy setting my department up and getting everything working like a well oiled machine.

That said... IT'S FIXED!!!

The battery was weak, VERY weak. I'm actually surprised it didn't throw any codes.

I followed the JTIS manual for disconnecting, replacing and reconnecting the battery.

New plugs - NGK Iridiums
The CORRECT oil - Castrol 5W30
New oil filter
New intake air filter
Torqued everything down properly
New 900 CCA battery

It runs and sounds great. No ticking or knocking like in the previous videos anymore. I'll post a new video in a bit.

so, you decided a battery solved the ticking noise?

I believe it had something to do with the 15W40 Rotella I used for the previous oil change. I should have listened to most here and stayed with Castrol 5W30. My wife noticed the ticking after the 15W40 oil change a couple of months before I started this thread.

The spark plugs that were in it looked well worn. The electrodes weren't pointed like the NGKs I installed. They looked dulled down.

It runs smoother and better now than when I bought it.

Here's a video of how it runs now:

It runs excellent now. Zero tick/clack or rattle at any RPM.
