I did a engine swap on a 2002 xjr a while back, never got it to run for more that a few seconds. Pulled all the plugs and they are very black (too much fuel?), not sure if the O2 sensors are hooked up correctly. The guy who installed them took the
connectors off the mounting plate so up stream or down stream could be crossed. would this cause the problem? something isn't right. the block is from a 99 xjr with heads from the 02 all the sensors are from the 02 was told this would work, also
did a compression test and got 120 +-2psi on all cylinders. also checked fuel pressure it was good at 40psi at the rail. any ideas what could be wrong?
I take it you don’t have any stored codes even though it was running for a few seconds?
Since you mentioned it was awhile ago, how old is the fuel?
What happened to the previous engine?
Wait a minute, we had something like this happen to another members car within a year ago. If I’m not mistaken, a 99’ XJR is an AJ26 engine and I know an 02’ XJR is an AJ27. Whoever swapped the engine, did they swap the flex plate from the old engine? That could very well be your problem.
the engine would run right after the swap only for a few seconds. took to local mechanic he used another fuel source and still no good. , the original engine thru a rod on #1 and #2 cylinders, block was trash, cant remember if I swapped the flex plate.... mechanic said the flex plate
was kinda far from the sensor, I checked another 02 and it seemed to be about the same distance I hate to do the flex plate not sure if I still have the old one... the crank was trash and may have scrapped it.
Read all of post #4. The AJ27 flex plate is the one on the right (or bottom) and should be the one installed on your engine. If you have the AJ26 flex plate (left or top) still on your AJ27 engine management platform car, then that’s why it’s not running.
If you have someone to help you, have them rotate the engine CLOCKWISE ONLY (looking from the front of the engine) while your underneath the car looking for the elongated section of the telltale mark. Report your findings back here.
ok having trouble finding the correct flex plate. using the block on my AJ 26, didn't take the flex plate off the crank. the AJ 27 block has been gone for a while. I think I left the flex plate on the crank when it was discarded.
I see on ebay they are selling flex plates from a xj8 claiming it will fit the 2002 jaguar xjr. Will they work? how can I tell I'm getting the correct flex plate?
ok thanks still quite a job on my garage floor, I guess not impossible just swapped out a trans in a Ford F250 diesel this is gonna be harder.
thanks for the info.
oh before I get around to doing it is there any way to see if I might have the correct flex plate? should I spin it and check where the large slot is or what?
Did you look at my pic of the AJ26 drive plate?
The triangle indent is only present on the AJ26 plate.
All others do NOT have the little stamp in the metal.
saw the picture, can it be seen while on the car. I don't want to take the trans off only to find out the flex plate was swapped out. There were two other guys working on the car when we did the engine swap no one remembers if the flex plate
was changed.
Yeah just turn the flywheel and look through the access hole in transmission, there is a rubber grommet to the left of the crankshaft position sensor. View it through that hole.
The answer is yes, you can see if you have the right one without pulling the trans out.
From post #4:
”If you have someone to help you, have them rotate the engine CLOCKWISE ONLY (looking from the front of the engine) while your underneath the car looking for the elongated section of the telltale mark. Report your findings back here.”
Just a half inch to the left of the crankshaft position sensor, there might be a rubber plug. If there is, remove it, if not, use a flashlight and the method above and you’ll get the answer. Get the facts before you pull the trans out and report back here.
