2003 XJ8 VDP Gas Pedal Just Flops
So I was thinking of trading in my Jag and brought it to a new Subaru car dealership for them to quote me their offer. Im not looking to be mean here but the Used Car Manager who came out was something like 6’ 5” tall and well over the size of any any linebacker Ive ever seen……see where this is going?
So he did his thing, got in and out of my car and went inside to write up his offer.
PROBLEM- When I went to leave and got in the car it started right up as always, I shifted it into gear fine, pressed down on the gas pedal and NOTHING. It was as if the pedal wasn't there. Well in fact it was just flopping around and controlling nothing.
after the guy totally denied even getting in the car because of his size, the other salesman told the General Manager that this other guy was in the car and had major issues getting in/out. The GM called out a mechanic who discovered that the pedal assembly was broken under the dash. Specifically he said there is a plastic ball socket that attaches to a steel ball and shaft and that the plastic ball socket is broken and three pieces were laying on the carpet. He declared this as NOT REPAIRABLE.
So my question is has anybody had to fix this? Are parts available? Does it meed an entire mew pedal assembly? And if so, is this a standard swap of parts or are there adjustments needed or anything involved directly with the throttle body or traction control modules that only a Jag dealer should handle?
Thanks
jeff

I have no direct experience with this, but the SNG Barratt fische shows a sturdy accelerator pedal system that pivots on pins, and operates a cable.
The cable attaches to the throttle body under the hood.
Check the cable at the throttle body, maybe it is broken?
With a flashlight inspect the accelerator pedal to look for damage.
I can't think that repairs will be serious.
Yup, on #1 where it clips onto #4 is the problem. Appears that the attachment point on #1 is indeed a plastic ball socket which #4 (a steel ball for pivoting) presses into. Looks like the guy cracked off the ball socket so now the entire pedal just flops around as it is no longer attached to that pivot point.
Difficult to visualize what has happened to your mechanism as my gas pedal looks to pivot on a simple steel pin, and I can't imagine the pedal flopping around unless the pin actually came out.
The steel pin is secured by a simple crimp washer on the left side, and the pedal returns by means of a spring on the steel pin.

The pedal seems to be NLA so you need to look for it on Ebay or junk yards. You can see attachment of the pedal on the pics on Ebay - Jaguar XJ X308 2000 Vanden Plas Accelerator throttle pedal MNE5372AB PUM13271 | eBay and 98-03 Jaguar X350 XJ8 Vanden Plas Accelerator Brake Gas Pedal Assembly OEM | eBay.
