If you're not familiar with Bring a Trailer, group hysteria usually results in high bids.

 

It's nice but you can still find good examples at a much cheaper price. BaT is such a comical ripoff unless money is no object for the buyer.

 

Bat is a great place to sell, a foolish place to buy.

 

I also have a Carrera. On the Rennlist forum the saying is “buy on PCarMarket and sell on BaT.”

 

The used car shortage, I believe, is driving opportunist sellers and dealers to really jackup prices on cars that look good to the non-jag-educated. About two or three months ago I saw an '03 VDP at a dealer in PA with about 12-14K miles asking about $24,000. the listing vanished within days so I would assume it sold at something near that price. Right now there is a three-owner 2000 xj8L in the Miami area on Ebay, 14,000 miles, asking $32,500. No mention of its tensioner or transmission upgrade status. It's a pretty car (blue on cream), but no way even I would pay that price.

Of course, I say this as someone who a year ago this week (pre car supply panic) bought an '03 VDP with 30,000 miles for $11,000 plus tax to replace an '06 VDP totaled by a falling tree.

 

Absolutely right, with the new car chip shortage the used car market is wildly inflated. Much like the housing market due to inventory shortage and cost of materials. Not a good time to buy either, a seller dominated market.

 

No kidding. a 78-year-old neighbor with a disabled husband had to replace her CRV a couple months ago and asked me to help. Her dealer had 2 in stock with the trim she wanted. Her 13-yo trade had non-working AC. She paid what amounted to MSRP. All I could do was get the rest of the BS fees, taxes and the pittance of a trade-in credit included in the total. Nevertheless, checking online that figure was described at the time as a "great deal." so she was happy.

 

I had a coworker who traded in their 6 year old Silverado for what they originally paid, it's nuts. Also someone just paid 23K for a 20 year old, 4 cylinder, manual Ford Ranger on BaT.
