4.2 Lower Crank pulley upgrade
Howdy all,
my car has now been running great for about 1500 miles since the headgaskets and I'd like to step up the blower speed a bit. The 16 or 18% lowers seem a bit much with my 6% upper, so I'm considering the 4.2 setup. My understanding is that the timing cover and pulley bolt right on, with the only gotcha being the 6 rib pulley instead of 7. From this thread, that seems to be a non-issue:

So I guess I'm wondering why this isn't more popular or if I'm missing something on doing the job.
Thanks as always and happy holidays.

I have a 08’ XFR 4.2 harmonic balancer with my stock 4.0 timing cover on for about 10k miles now. Look at my signature below. I highly recommend getting an upgraded intercooler radiator as the Heaton stands up to its reputation when overdriven and driven hard.
You DO NOT need a 4.2 timing cover to use a 4.2 harmonic balancer on a 4.0 engine.

I have the amg bosch pump but will consider a better intercooler.
You used a 6 rib belt with your 7 rib pullies?
Thanks gents
You da man, thanks

hi, don't know if I am exactly answering your question. here is my experience.
I upgraded both upper and lower pulleys from powerhouse UK on my stock 4.0 engine. I got their lower pulley shipped to NY. realized I needed to remove the stock crank balancer, need to find a machine shop cut off the balancer and bolt the upgraded pulley to the balancer.
I would not find any shops around me to do the job. I ended up sending back my crank balancer AND the new pulley back to powerhouse UK. they did a very nice job for me. I am happy out the end result .

good to know vincent. I am attracted to the 4.2 pulley because it retains full (if not better) function of the harmonic dampner, its cheap, and now it seems like install will be trivial (well, getting the thing off is never trivial, but at least doesn't require modification).
I don't want to spin the ever loving hell out of my aptly named Heaton for no reason. That said, I've been looking at how I drive the car most often and its generally an isolated pull here and there (getting on the highway or leaving a light) and shifting at about 5000 rpm. As such, a bit of extra grunt down low should be nice.
If I find that i'm doing repeat pulls, I'd likely upgrade further the cooling and such.

My understanding is that the 18% aftermarket crank pulleys will produce an extra 4.5 psi of boost over stock. I currently have a 1.5lb upper pulley. So by adding the 10% larger 4.2 crank pulley, you end up with roughly 4 extra lb of boost. Given that the roots blowers make boost down low, you end up with about 25bhp or so and maybe as much as 30lb ft of torque at a low usable rpm. Is it earth shatteringly different, no...but for under $200 and maybe 3 hours of work, it seems like a good option.
Assuming you've done this now, is it noticeable when driving? I can feel where bit extra bottom end grunt would be nice on occasion but considering how happy the car is to shift down I'm not sure I'd notice the difference?
After having to order a few of those bleed hoses, it took me a bit longer to complete the job. Does it make a difference...well, yes it definitely pulls harder. Again, there is only so much one can do with a heaton, so its as far as im going to go. The cost for this project was just over $200, so to me it was worth it. Your mileage may vary.
If you don’t have it already, I’d definitely recommend getting the upgraded intercooler pump and larger radiator. Look it up on the UK based eBay website to find it for a lot less than the USA based eBay.
just order from powerhouse UK
You’re right, I did. However, some time afterwards Xalty provided a link to a UK eBay and it was considerably less than what I paid for mine. I took it as a ‘discount for fellow UK’ is how I took it.
