I had my low coolant light on fore a couple months and could never figure out why it was on. I checked the coolant many times and it was never low. I checked the float and it was working properly. So I decided to not worry about it. Well I had to replace a fuel pump and after doing so I was putting the plastic back on the top of the motor after testing the pressure at the fuel rail and saw this lil guy hanging from below the coolant tank. I put it back in the hole it was falling out of and it clicked into place. Since then no issues with the light, its off and has not came back on yet so that must have been the issue.
Can anyone tell me what it is called or what it does? Is it the pole that the float rides on and if so why did the float seem to work okay?

 

It's the coolant sensor. The float closes the circuit around the sensor, if the coolant is full. It just snaps in.
