98 XJ8 Engine cuts out
Hi there,
My XJ8, 1998, left hand drive, 84,000 miles, has developed an annoying habit of stalling out, or cutting out after I have been driving on the Interstate/Motorway at 70 mph (all fine whilst driving) for a while but when I touch the brake or lift off the accelerator/gas pedal or cancel the cruise it cuts out. I have to stop on the side of the road and restart the engine. No lights stay on, message just says engine stalled. Generally it starts up just fine and off I go again. Generally this doesn't happen around town, just after a stint at 70.
Any common reasons why this should happen?
Thanks guys,
Michigan.

Your car is within the Service Action period that replaced the throttle body for exactly the symptoms you describe. Unfortunately, the free replacement expired at the end of '09. See this link to the Service Action. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/s...ad.php?t=25334
Look for S514.

I had the same problem. Runs great most of the time. It would stall when accellerating on the on ramp just as I let off the throttle. I did the following
1. Cleaned the throttle body with spray cleaner and used a vacuum to
clean up the residue. If it sticks even a little, the fuel/air mixture gets
out of wack quickly.
2. Just for fun I cleaned the MAF (Be sure to use a spray cleaner designed for it,
not the same one you used for the throttle body).
