Default 98 xjr loud squeeking at cold start.

Hey guys.. so my jag has been making squeeking noises for a while now. First started when I replaced my water pump. It also was making some rattling noises from one of the pullies. took it into a local european shop and got the idler pullie changed. So now there is no more rattling sound but the squeeking is still there, at least when starting and the engine is cool. Its really loud but goes away when engine gets to temp. Took it back to the shop but by the time i got there my engine was warmed up and sounded great....of course, like she was brand new....i hate when that happens. They checked my belt and they said it looks good and the tension was where it should be. But of course every time i start the engine and its cold shes a squeeking and its driving me nuts, im spraying wd40 on it but thats just temporary. What do you guys think it would be? i payed 440 dollars already and im pissed that i still have to hear that every time i start the car. any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

I know it's inconvenient but sometimes it is necessary to leave the car with them overnight so they can hear the problem to diagnose it. What are you spraying with WD40? If it is the belt then it is bad no matter how it looks.

I spray the belt and also the pulleys. If it was a squeek coming fro the pulley would it go away when car is warmed up or would it be a constant? ya im thinking the same thing about leaving the car over night.

If you spray enough crap on the main serpentine belt, it can jump right off the idler pulley. I watched it happen. You can sparingly apply anything you want to aid in diagnosing the source of a noise, but those belts are designed to be dry and won't tolerate alot of tampering with.

no i never spray too much, cause ya i heard that that could happen. Im going to take it in and leave it over night, my guess is that it just needs a new belt. thank you guys.

Mine just started squeeking and the dealer said it's my belt and not the tensioner. I sprayed belt dressing to see and it stopped squeeking for a day and started back two mornings later. So I will be replacing the belt with the Goodyear Gatorback belt. I agree it doesn't matter how it look my belt is less than 1 year old and has around 10k miles.

I would not use WD40...better to use silicon spray.
