Default 98XJ8 trans slip?? no go until hi rev.

Boy do I love this car. I have never had a vehicle that kept me on my toes like this XJ8.

I have a new problem, this time with the car not moving. It makes a "woot woot woot" sound that follows the vehicle rpm faster and slower and the car seems to be in neutral until you rev it a small amount under 2000 RPMs and then it kicks in like you dropped it into drive and the "woot woot woot noise fades slowly a feew blocks down the road.

It first happened when backing out of the driveway early in the morning in somewhat of a hurry, I was takin' it real easy on the car because I only gave it about 2-3 minutes of warm up time before taking off on a cold morning. I backed out and put it into drive and it just sat there under no gas pedal pressure )usually it will inch forward) so I gave it a bit of gas (maybe 1000-1300 rpm and nothing, it just reved like it was in park or neutral. I gopt the RPMs up to about 15-1800rpm and it kicked into gear and drove fine, but with the noise.
It then happened again while backing into a space at work, going from reverse to drive it seemed to take its time to get into gear and required a bit of gas to kick in. This time the vehicle was at regular op. temp.
It happen once more while stopping at a red light the car slowed normally then seemed to pop into N at about 10 mph and stayed there until I revved it up a bit.
This almost seems like the trans is slippingexcept it doesn't slowly get into gear, it kicks in and it seems more like a vacuum leak or idle speed sensor of some sort.
Any help would be great!
Any Ideas?

looks like you may need a trani rebuild or a new trani

I hope not. Does any one know a few things I could check to determine the true cause? I'm taking this car out of town on Tuesday on business and I'll be carry a few other associates with me, I need this car to make it.
Or maybe I'll rent a magnum....

i suggest you rent a car.. dont want your car to brake down far away from home .. you'll get the gear box fault message and trani will go into limp home mode.. not to mention a costly tow
