Default Air compressor noise from behind the dash

I’ve had my 98 XJR for 2 years now. Never heard this noise til last night. Sounds like a small air compressor behind the dash that comes on intermittently even when the car is off. Any ideas?

Probably the aspirator fan in the dash for the climate control sensors. The fans get noisy from dirt build up. If you look closely you can see a small pattern of perforations near the steering column. That is the fan inlet area. I have had pretty good luck sticking a shop vac over the perforations and removing the dirt to quieten the fan.
It comes on when the door is opened and will run a short while after you exit the vehicle.

Try this test...
Next time you run the engine, make sure that the A/C button is off and do not use your defrost for this test. Run the engine 1 minute with climate control on and make sure the auto button is in the off mode. Turn the engine off and listen for this noise your hearing. If you do not hear the noise, start the engine again and turn the A/C on and run it for 1 minute. If the noise your hearing behind the dashboard is present after you turn the engine off, it’s most likely that your Freon is low in the system. Getting the Freon topped off will remedy the noise. It has something to do with low Freon level and the expansion valve that’s located in the dashboard.

Freon level is good. Assuming since going through the ash/smoke of the fires here that highhorse is probably right. Seems like this little motor runs quite a bit even while driving. Hope it’s not going out

So figured it out. I wasn’t even close. A few months ago the tracks on my sunroof crumbled to pieces. It’s locked into the vent position just slightly open. No worries I’ve preserved a replacement from a salvage car. Anyway for some unknown reason the motor for the roof started running. Got home pulled the upper console and sure enough that’s what it was. Unplugged it now no problem.
