Air Filter Suggestions?

Hopefully you kept the box or instructions that came with the KN filter. Cleaning and oil renewal inst are there. If not, go back to the parts store and read the instructions on another
and also you may want to clean your maf. Surprised you didnt know this before you installed the filter

It only takes a little research to save yourself a significant amount of money over the life of your vehicle. Here are just a couple of examples:
For our 1993 XJ40, the original equipment manufacturer of the air filter is the German-based company Mann (they also made the entire air cleaner housing). If you buy an air filter from the Jaguar dealer, the filter inside the Jaguar box is made by Mann (it may even be marked Mann). The retail price for Jaguar part number EAC5672 is USD $40.31. The exact same Mann filter, part number C2217, is available from RockAuto.com for $5.68. The X300 uses the essentially identical Mann air cleaner housing and its filter is the identical EAC5672/C2217 part.
For our 2004 X350 XJR, the original equipment manufacturer of the air filter housing and filter is the U.S.-based company Visteon, a former division of Ford that is now an independent OEM. If you buy an air filter from the Jaguar dealer, the filter inside the Jaguar box is made by Visteon (it's even marked Visteon with a Ford part number). The retail price for Jaguar part number AJ82766 is $30.92. The old Visteon filter, Ford part number 2W93-9601-AC, is no longer available on the aftermarket due to Visteon's protracted bankruptcy proceedings. Mann offers a visually identical filter, part number C30115, which is $16.82 at RockAuto, and Wix also offers a visually identical filter, part number 42261, available at RockAuto for $9.99 or at our local O'Reilly Auto Parts store for $15.99.
The X308 air cleaner housings are not marked with Mann's name, but the OEM part number molded into the cover, 46 130 85 909, conforms to Mann's numbering pattern. The photo of the "Jaguar" X308 filter below clearly shows that it is made in Germany, and its OEM part number, 45 130 54 126, also conforms to Mann's numbering pattern:

The Mann "aftermarket" air filter part number for a N/A X308 is C 31 130. It looks a whole lot like the "Jaguar" filter, and even carries the identical "Wartung nach Bedienungsanleitung" lettering (Which means something like, "Maintain according to the Owner's Manual."). The Jaguar part number is NJA3558AA and the Jaguar retail price is $65.36. At RockAuto, the same Mann filter is $12.43.
I don't have anything against the Jaguar dealership. I'm grateful that they keep common maintenance parts in stock and can usually get other parts from the New Jersey headquarters within 2 or 3 days. They're always very helpful when I can't figure out a part number on my own. But I don't see any reason to blindy fork over a significant markup just for the privilege of receiving the part in a Jaguar box, or more often these days, in a clear plastic bag with a Jaguar part number label. It's the part inside that matters, and Jaguar actually makes very, very few of those.

I go along with your comments on K&N ;o))
I also have been using them for about 20 years.
My last car (Rover 3500SE) had the very same filter for 12 years.
They will last for years if cleaned and lubed properly.
I'm not saying they provide massive performance....they don't and you really
only notice a difference at high revs where the K&N breathes better.
I think the big difference is in long term ownership.
The initial purchase price is made up over long service.
I run a K&N in my 98 X308 which has covered 210,000klm and has been running a K&N for the last five years.
The various bar room myths you hear are usually brought about by people who don't service the filter correctly and end up over oiling it which allows oil vapours to upset the MAF meter.
If you use the correct K&N oil as is described and not use engine oil as I have seen done, you have no problems ;o))
