In my 2000 XK8 the small spring that attaches at the center of the cupholder has come loose. I see the spring attached below but cannot figure out what it attaches to at the top. It is inhibiting the ability of the cup holder to fold closed. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Hi kwsmas
Here are a few cupholder illustrations that came from tsb 501-06 that was provided by forum member motorcarman in post# 13:

Illustration 3 shows some kind of center spring, illustrations 1 and 4 shows wire that goes into the center of both springs on each side of the cup holder and around the cupholder unit.

Hope this helps

Thanks, Jim for the illustration! The small spring actually has a hook to anchor the cup holder arm--like in illustration #one where the three arrows are on the top left hand side, at the middle arrow but underneath that folding double o shaped arm that actually holds a drink. The small little spring keeps the arm from folding up and keeps it intact when you try to fold it into the console as you close it. I think I am going to have to take the assembly off to even see where it hooks to, and your diagram will help me accomplish that. There is space in the hook to obviously slip it over something, so perhaps when I disassemble it, I can see what it connects to! Thank you again for your help. Wish me luck!

Hi kwsmas
I found this youtube video on Jaguar XK8 Arm Rest/Cup Holder Repair by forum member Reverend Sam (he has 3601 posts on the forum):

It actually shows the disassembly and repair of all the parts in the cupholder.

That is exactly the way I have decided to go, but my interior leather is in really good condition. So have bought a NEW console lid including Cup Holder, (Off E-Bay) and as I cannot find a match for my NED interior color, remove my existing leather covering off my existing one, and exchange it with the covering on my New Lid/Cup Holder. Can't be too difficult Eh ??? I will report on my progress later.

This is an older thread, but since Iwas dealing with this probem rcently (just installed the eplaceent an hour ago!), I decided to post my experience with this.

When i purchased the car (two weeks ago), the cupholder was naturally broken. I searched all the "usual suspects", and after learnng that this is a known and frequent problem, I decided to go without the cupholder! I don't eat or drink in my cars, and I NEVER used a cupholder on any vehicle I own.

Long story short, ....found a whole assembly (the storage compartment and the lid) on Ebay from UK. From a 1999 XJ8 made for UK, and the armrest does not have a cupholder!! BINGO! As I removed the obsolete telephone from the storage tray anyway, the bonus was,....the tray from the UK, was designed without the telephone in mind. The compartment is deeper than the US version, without cutouts for the phone cables.

My interior is NED (Ivory), but the new lid is the same color as the top of the dash, doors, seat piping, parkng brake hande, and the steerng wheel. I bought this assembly thinking abut dying the leather, but I actually like it in this contrasting color. The price with shipping was about 115US.

Anyway,....just wanted to post this in case someone out there is annoyed by the flimsy cupholder, and is looking for an alernative.

I had a similar problem, but resolved it this way. My leather was in really good condition, but although my existing cup holder would stay shut MOST of the time, occasionally it would flip open. This annoyed me somewhat, so I bought a NEW Center Console lid/Cup holder off E-Bay for $175 incl shipping, color was then irrevelent to me. Exchanged my existing leather covering for the new one, (As no color match could be obtained, my interior is also NED) by removing/replacing a few securing screws. All done in about 20 minutes, and it now works like NEW. I consider a GREAT and CHEAP fix. Anyone else done this ???

Sounds like a good idea to replace the existing one with one that doesn't have a cup holder - to me anyway. My original cup holder is too small for the humongerous drinks we now have here in the USA and if you try to use it, it just gets in the way. I also don't drink or eat in my cars, or smoke in the car either for that matter.

Sorry, no pics. I think I can't post them yet, I'm a newbie. But I will revisit the thread and post the pics later.

There is a NED lid on Ebay now (also out of UK), without cupholder. It's a lid only (no tray), and the price is rediculously low. I was ready to buy that one too, and sell the stuff I don't need. Luckily, I like the contrasting color I've got now. The reason I bought this one is because I wanted the deeper tray. US VDP from 98, has a phone control box under the shallow tray, and the front of the tray/compartment is cut out for the phone cables. This UK tray is two inches deeper, no cut outs (so the small loose stuff that ends up in there will not disappear under the center console).

The one I got is in like new condition, and for the minimum ammount of money I solved three problems (scuffed NED leather, broken cupholder, and shallow cutout compartment). The thing is,....all XJ8s have "man made leather" inside except VDP (I was told), so this lid is "man made" (read plastic!), but it doesn't bother me, because it looks just like the top plastic on the dash, and it will wear better than the original NED leather. This area (armrest) gets a lot of use. Sleve buttons, zippers in the winter, and bare skin (oily!) in the summer. I think plastic will take this abuse better.

Now I have to figure out how to connect the phone antenna (on the back window), to work as a radio antenna, and disable the automatic antenna that I don't like. I intend to use the existing cable, and mount (the glass is drilled as is), and replace the mast with something similar to BMW "shark fin", or a MBZ set up, to be carwash proof.

Then comes a Bluetooth device, integrated into the OEM audio system, that works with my Droid, and my IPod, and I'm all set. It has to be hidden under the centre console (or inside the glove box), for I don't like any visible addons.

If anyone did something like this, I'd appreciate the ideas/pointers.

FYI, I've just stumbled on a web site selling the cup holder for a low price of $146.75 + 11.74 = $158.49. That is the least pricey I've seen so far.

siteid=215718Jaguar Parts Center - Call (800) 510-1401 for Genuine Jaguar Parts and Accessories

On eBay someone claims a cup holder repair for $79 + shipping.

I haven't decided if or which I may try. I just thought someone could use the info. Hope it helps.

Hi,

Have not posted in a long time but my 95 XJR cup holder finally broke and I knew about the weak design around the spring tensioner. I wanted to share my fix and thus far cup holds up well. I studied the design and found out the weak area and fixed it with some "2.5 x 1/4 Lag Screws Washer Hex Head" and "Speed Nut U Screw Size 1/4-20 " hardware.

Here are some images.

I don't think my wife is happy unless she spills something in one of our cars at least once a week.

Default X350 center console retrofit

My 2002 Jaguar XJ8s cupholder works just like it came out of the factory (which means it doesn't work). I had a hair brained idea - could you retrofit a x308 car with a center console (I mean the whole thing up to the stereo) out of an X350? Curious to see if anyone has done it. Thanks.

If you want to DELETE the cupholder, you can use the XJ40 or later XJS console lid and get it dyed to your trim code.

I went the other way and had the X300 console dyed to match my XJ40 trim to HAVE a cuphoder.

Default X350 Console in an X308

To clarify, I'm asking can you put the entire console out of a later model X350 into the earlier model X308? I still want cup holders, and in the later cars they are built into the console itself where the ashtray is on the earlier cars. It lowers the center of gravity and reduces the chance of your drink tipping over. I still want a cup holder, just not built into the lid.

I found an aftermarket on Amazon that slides in between the console and the passenger seat but it is not a perfect solution. It does reduce the risk of the drink tipping over.
