battery, alternator or ????
I have a 1999 XJ8. I have replaced alternator and battery as recommended by a shop that tested both and said the alternator was not charging and the battery was 7 years old and should be replaced. This did not fix the problem which was it still doesnt seem to be charging the battery. After a driving for a while the battery goes dead and drivability gets bad..(many warnings on dash and then it doesn't want to run) It would start and run when I charged the battery or when it died a jumpstart. now I can not even jump start it. just a clicking possibly in the starter solenoid?
Welcome to the forum!
Sounds like you need to start cleaning and tightening the several power and ground connections between the alternator and the remote battery. This issue usually shows up more as 'won't crank' rather than 'won't charge' but you now seem to have both.
The Jaguar Technical Information System (JTIS) is available as a free download in the FAQ sticky above. It has all the power connections identified in the electrical section. Here is the link:

I appreciate your help and the link.... I got it downloaded on computer but windows detected some problem and will not let me open it. got the car on a trailer to have it looked at by a mechanic tomorrow lol... hate to do this but its that or set it on fire out of frustration... again thank you for your help guys
The ground strap and connections in the trunk/boot are very important, there's another ground strap under front passenger foot well area, and a connection through the "false bulkhead" under hood front right. I've had weird issues due to bad connections.
I can start the car but not getting charge to the battery. not the starter... I will check wiring... don't have a real diagram. I will post later after I get out of the shop.....

Here are the schematics for the high power distribution and the battery, starter, generator wiring from JTIS.
Couple thoughts: Ground is as important as B+ and the generator has to be powered in order to produce power.

Holy cow got the car back purrrrrrrring like a kitten.... The schematics you gave me helped so much... I went around to every connection and cleaned them. Turns out the connection at the bulk head extension was the culprit. It was completely fried and melted. I temporarily put it together until I can get parts but she is charging and purring. Can't thank everyone for their input enough..... I will be back soon I'm sure the car has 170,000 miles on it so, SOON I'M SURE!!
