Question BBS Montreal Wheel Paint

Good day,

I've purchased some 19" BBS Montreal Wheels from a wrecked XJR-100 and am in the process of refinishing them, but ran into a snag after they came back from the powder coater a horrible stock General Motors silver(grey) color. They promised they could get it very close and I figured Powder Coating had come a long way, but they really missed the mark. I mean, it would look great on some cars, but not right for the Jag.

The back of the wheel says BA Silver and Oyster; the former for the center and the later for the dish presumably. I've seen a few recommendations, but I'm not sure what to do from here. I need that hyper-silver like luster of the original,... so much so I might even go with a hyper-silver like this one from Motostorm: www.motostorm.com/hypersilver.html

If anyone knows how to get the stock color, please advise. If all of the above fails, I'll either sell them or chrome them just to be "that guy" as I'm at my wits end. HELP!

Awwwww..............I've seen this done.......................but I can't remember how they did it!!!!
I think it was a chrome paint over a black basecoat.
The only people I know who do chrome paint is Jawal over here in the UK, and it's expensive stuff.

Here you go. They have a place in Canada and Minneapolis.

I am so glad you brought this up Eric. I also purchased a set of wheels from an XJR-100 and one of them was so damaged that nobody would touch it. Anyways, I purchased a replacement refurbished wheel from across the pond and I too asked about the paint code. They must send them out to be refurbished because they had to make a call to get an idea. Anyways, they said it was a Mercedes silver paint but didn't specify and that's all I could get. When I get more time, I'll match them up at a local body shop. Were you the one that bought a set off of eBay about 6 weeks ago??

Default Yep

Yeah, I probably bought the set you are talking about off of E-bay. Pulled the bolts my self. No damage to the threads or bolts. Pain in the *** to remove the one of the trim rings though.

Found replacement trim rings for about $400 for the set of 4 including shipping from the UK, so I was happy about that.

Powder Coat was $425 out the door for all 4. Finish looks flawless, but color is basic and it's glossy instead of shiny.

The pictures show one of the original and one of the refinished.

Thanks Steve for the recommendation however, I'm looking to have this done locally.

Yep - I understand the problem, and dug down even speaking to BBS directly. They offered to refurb them at the time (around 6 years ago) but the cost was prohibitive.

I also contacted a specialist in the UK - the closest match to OEM finish is with Wurth Alloy silver paint, basically Wurth brilliant silver. You can buy their alloy wheel refurb paint kit in rattle cans, which I am planning to do, I won't be painting a set of mine I'll hand them to my painter guy.

The primer base is off white, and very light dusting silver coats built up over this base will give the finish. Then a clear to seal it off.

Powder coat = waste of time!

Erick, what was up with that one wheel that was severely discolored when it was pictured on eBay? It looked as if it was exposed to well water.

I know what you mean about that wheel color since you had it coated. It definitely doesn't look right.

Sean, a can of spray paint huh? You are a braver man than I.

Powder coat has come a long way and there are hundreds of colors now. I really thought they could do it, but the shop must have misunderstood what I was looking for. The finish is amazing.

That was paint discoloration from exposure to high heat. I've actually seen the results of the Wurth paint, but I thought it looked closer to the Sepang color than the Montreal. It didn't have the luster,... unless I'm thinking of a different Wurth paint.

Anyhow, it's looking more and more like I'm going to go with the Motostorm Hypersilver. I think it will look bad ***. Would only cost me $50 too (discounting the clear coat) as the good gentleman who did the powder coat will spray them for free since the color came out wrong.

If you're looking for something a little different, but closer to the original 'oyster' colour, maybe see if they have something similar to Porsche's White Gold Metallic wheel/decal colour

Correct me if I'm wrong, but the "Oyster" part is the wheel (a medium dark almost gun metal grey) and the "BA Silver" is the center (an unpolished looking smooth metal color).

I do like the look of the Porsche, but I don't think it works for the X308. Maybe if you wrapped the chrome in the same gold hue,... Might look good especially on a Black one.

Some terms I learned when looking into these wheels.
The 9 spoke inner wheel is called a spider.
The outside part of the wheel that the tire mounts to is called a.barrel.
The oyster the above poster is referencing to is actually a color. To me anyways, the color is a goldish silver. Hope this clarifies.

Esit: I just reread what you posted. Also the oyster color on the back of the spider is also specifically just for the spider. That color wasn't meant for the barrel. As far as I remember, there is no color code stamped on the barrel. From what I've been told, it's the same paint code used for the XJR 💯. I believe it's called anthracite.

Default Update

Got the centers back on 15 February.

Came out great. Hard to tell in the picture, but they came out a very nice stainless metallic look. Finish is not as nice as before with the powder coat, but hoping to get a bit more luster out of them when I polish them up.

I'll wait a month and then polish them up and probably wait another month after that and wax coat them a couple times and install them with the beauty rings.

It's a fine silver and clear coat with the motostorm hyper silver on top.

The pictures show the progression.

Original wheel.

Fine Silver on left. Powder coat on right.

Fine Silvery color swatch.

Motostorm Hyper Silver over Fine Silver.

Default Tire Recommendations

So I've seen a few threads with tire recommendations and was wondering if anyone had any updates. Currently leaning toward the Bridgestone Potenza,... thoughts?

Love them, I've used Michelin Pilot sport 2's for a long time but switched on a recommendation from a tire guy I trust and never looked back.
I assume you're fitting to the Montreal? I've found best performance is to follow Jaguar recommended tire pressures for comfort and sport. I've only used them for summer use as the car is, traction is good once they've got some temp in them, grip level on a par with the Michelin. They are quieter also, but not by much. Tire wear is better on them, Bridgestone Potenza RE50 19 255 35 Y96 MO fitting all round. One of the best asymmetric options, these cars don't do symmetrical tread patterns.

Thank you for the recomendation. Do you know what's up with the different pricing on the Potenzas? Will it make a big difference if I go for whatever Potenza is cheaper? I won't be going above 120mph.

It's a personal choice, the big one is price v performance, you'll not need as high speed/load rating and there's a lot of choice these days with almost every new car running larger wheel sizes, a few years ago the choice was somewhat limited, now even so called budget tires are at such a good standard...

In Europe a number of manufacturers are running different branded tires for different price points and they're usually a lot cheaper than well known brands, I wouldn't fit them to my car as it's far from standard performance wise but on my daily driver I do, Michelin Poland made for half the price.

Good day!
Last year i had the same problem with my new purchased Montreal's.
A call at the BBS headquarter Germany (btw very friendly and supportive guys!) gave me the lead for the best color match, they said VW L88Z.
I tought easy going, lets do this... the guy who should do the job gave me a call, 1200,- € just for the VW L88Z paint, without labor...
So we switched over to use A56 Chrome Shadow, its also used on BMW E39 M5 wheels, but with some more layers to brighten up the color.

If somebody wants to see the results just let me know.

Regards
Maxi
