Default Brake lights not working

Hi everyone, I noticed my brake lights are not working every time when I press the brake pedal, this has caused my car not to be able to get out of park so i have to hit the brakes for a few minutes to get the brake lights to work.

What do you guys recommend to look at first and the steps leading forward?

Anthony

The very first thing to check it’s the brake light switch mounted on the brake pedal. These have been known to become stuck over time, simple to remove and clean and lubricate.

Finally got around to doing this job, and figured out my switch was indeed bad when I put a multimeter to it.
I went and picked up a used one from a 2000 XJ and the continuity read good but noticed the part numbers were off by the last letter.

My PN - LNB 6420 BA
Junkyard PN - LNB 6420 BB

Will I still be able to use this brake switch?

Yours is a '98 and the "BB" part is a 2000, but My guess is it will work just fine.

Ok thank you, it plugs in so I’ll fasten it and hope for the best.
