Hello Jaguar Forums! I'm back!

I just wanted to ask everyone a "buy or not buy" question. I am looking at a 1998 Jaguar XJ8 with around 75,000 miles for about $8,000. Its a beautiful car (of course) but i am just fear that it may become a money pit. Should i buy it i will try to post the link. Thanks Jaguar forums!

The age old question... I personally would stay away from a '98. That is the first year of the production run and as such would have the most issues. Later in '99 they made some changes and then again in the 2001-2003. I saw they also have a '01 VDP. Go look at them both and drive them both and see if you can see the difference. This one looks to be the "L" model, which is the same as the VDP without all the extra frills. You will probably find the VDP to be the better car, but who knows. Either one is a bit over priced, so I would negotiate the price if it were me.

Absolute minimum you need to know if the cam timing chain tensioners have been changed and go through the owners handbook and verify that all features and functions of the car work. A serious problem with the climate control system can cost as much as a transmission.

 

It seems a little pricey to me as well. In January my wife and I bought a '98 VDP with 37k for $9k. Half the miles is definitely worth $1k, to say nothing of the difference between the VDP and the XJ8L
