Cooling runs after the engine shuts down - overheated now. :(
Hi Everyone,
I hate to show up under these circumstances, but I just arrived home after overheating my jag.
It's a 2000 XJR.
Over the weekend, my cooling fan started running after I shut the car down. This was new behavior. I was planning to take it someplace as soon as I could afford it.
But now that it's overheated, it's an emergency. The place I need to take it is too far to drive it.
I'm thinking I have a bad cooling fan relay. Anyone agree or disagree?
I called around looking for one, thinking maybe I'd take a stab at it. Autozone said the cooling fan relay for my model is unavailable. Napa said I could bring it in and maybe they could match it up. Someone told me it's either a 4 or 5 prong relay and they're all pretty much the same. Is that true or BS?
To make matters worse, the box with the relays in it isn't labeled. I'm looking in a box above the drivers side front tire. I see what looks like 7 relay slots, with one relay missing.
Anyone have thoughts on any of this?

I had the same thing happen on my 2004 x-type. I found out that it is the antfreeze. I did not have enough antifreeze, because it was leaking from the pipes that lead to the radiator. The clamps on the car are not very strong, and can loosen. Check for those pipes. I bought some nice clamps that have a screw on it so you can screw it as tight as you need.

check your antifreeze level.
lastweek i flushed my coolant, after the flush all the fluid it would accept was about 2 quartz at first instead of the 6 quart capacity, i ran the car around the block and the temp gauge passed the norm. i immediately put the car in neutral and shut it off letting it roll to the front of my house about 100ft. the fan did not stop untill i added more coolant and restarted the car.
basicly check the coolant level before you replace any thermostats or sensors. if the level is okay id go with a thermostat . this happened to my fathers MY 2000 vandeplas.

I'm pretty sure the xj's have the low coolant level monitoring system, even in the 2000s. If it were coolant related, I would have hoped the OP would have mentioned that.
Common problem as JTO mentioned is the thermostat. They typically start acting up, opening and closing erratically, but not long afterward, stick close. Any mechanic can do this 2000, and if you must, must, must drive it to the garage, keep the heater on high and prepare yourself to about medium well on the way...it will help exchange at least some of the heat in the system, but not much.
