Default Damn those XJR wheel nut covers falling off!

I seem to lose about 4 of these a year. They just fall off. I've checked all of them and some seem fixed solid while others rattle a little - how are these suppose to stay on? Tapping them gently doesn't seem to secure them any better, some seem to have gunk on the nut which makes me wonder if there should be some type of sealant/adhesive used to keep them on (but not secure them until the end of time).

I get disproportionately cranky with these little things

Hi Troy,
Mine all seem to also be loose and rattle, but none have ever come off. I have lost the washer on the inside, but never the sheet metal cap. My understanding is that these caps are swedged on. I don't treat them gently either - the lug nuts all come off with an impact driver and are torqued to the proper setting when re-installed.

I do have a few spares just in case that I picked up at my last visit to the parts yard, but have not had to use them yet. Perhaps the ones you are having trouble with were overly torqued at an earlier time?

Good luck!

I do know if you get water in between the caps and nuts and they freeze they can swell and loosen. Don't know if that's an issue in AU.

I've lost one of mine. They just seem to be pressed on, but rather tightly. Give them a gentle squeeze with some pliers before you put them on again, and they should fit tighter.

Need to be treated carefully -- most times they are mishandled and over tightened.

Hand set them -- and start them by hand.

The proper way it to use some plastic wrap on the lug socket and make sure it is properly seated before final seating.

Never drop.

If you are talking about the 1.25" or 2" ones, XJ8 Series I & II '98-'08 - XJ8 Sedan Series I, 1998-2002 - Wheels - Wheel Nuts ..has them for a very good price on them. I just replaced all of mine about a month ago. I can tell you there's a seller on Ebay who wants $30 for each one.
For the 2", I believe an issue with the caps is the use of a 1" deep socket instead of a deep well to get down onto the secondary nut pattern when using impact guns. Thus all the torque is placed on the tin cap and loosens it.

"Estimated Qty on Hand: 3"

Bugger, I need a full set of the longer ones for my BBS wheels. They're really hard to find, unless as you say, you want to pay hundreds on Ebay

Contact them, they respond quickly, they had more than what they said when I ordered mine. If they don't, they should be able to tell you when they'll be in, if not, you can blame me for buying those 20..

I can tell you they are Eurospares, they shipped them in the sealed bags of 10. Here's another one, a little more expensive though...http://www.nextdayauto.com/2003-jagu...3-1624823.html ...I believe the '03 is the same.
