i have a 98 xj8 and the battery is completely dead. i have tried the key in the trunk but to no avail. dealer said something about putting a tool in license plate hole & hitting trunk lever. anybody ever do this? and how do you do it? and what side?
I agree with ag jumper it that way. I had the same problem withmy xj8 that I purchased. Also, 2 weeks ago I sprayed WD40 in the cylinder and worked it with the key for about 5 min and it work great!
If the above methods do not work for you, there is indeed a way to gain access to the trunk. There is a small hole behind the license plate (may be covered by a plastic piece) through which you can stick a screwdriver and trip the trunk opening mechanism.

Your response just made my day! I have a 98 XJR BlkonBlk and 1 week ago my instrument panel alerted me to a burnt out bulb for my brake-light system on the drivers side. Well, I figured that would take all of 10 minutes to correct - but lo and behold my trunk wouldn't unlock - keyless, valet-release and manually! In the current economy spending money on things that I can do myself doesn't make a whole lot of cents to me (pun intended here!) So I've been searching for a bypass solution that would get me into my trunk WITHOUT having to spend the $$$ - if I don't HAVE to. All this to say - I appreciate you sharing that info as I am going to give it a shot in about 20 minutes (working from home and am on a conference call that's about to end). You folks are the BEST....! My gut tells me this will work! It pays to troll the internet for useful info...
I can endorse this solution. I have a British registered XJ8 3.2 Year2001. I was totally locked out of boot and cabin. Must be a good idea to exercise the locks at least once per decade. I removed the rear UK registration plate and then removed the right side plastic screw retaining lug. That gave me full access to wave a long thin screw driver around.. It engaged with some part of the mechanism and up popped the lid. Now just waiting for the battery to take a decent charge.
Perfect solution, no drilling, no mess. Thanks everyone.

i could be wrong but I think this only applies to UK and other wide plate markets and not North American cars…
That's fine with me, I'm in the UK with proper sized plates.
