I agree with ag jumper it that way. I had the same problem withmy xj8 that I purchased. Also, 2 weeks ago I sprayed WD40 in the cylinder and worked it with the key for about 5 min and it work great!

If the above methods do not work for you, there is indeed a way to gain access to the trunk. There is a small hole behind the license plate (may be covered by a plastic piece) through which you can stick a screwdriver and trip the trunk opening mechanism.

I can endorse this solution. I have a British registered XJ8 3.2 Year2001. I was totally locked out of boot and cabin. Must be a good idea to exercise the locks at least once per decade. I removed the rear UK registration plate and then removed the right side plastic screw retaining lug. That gave me full access to wave a long thin screw driver around.. It engaged with some part of the mechanism and up popped the lid. Now just waiting for the battery to take a decent charge.
Perfect solution, no drilling, no mess. Thanks everyone.

That's handy to know it can be done without drilling, thanks.

That's fine with me, I'm in the UK with proper sized plates.
