Well, it could work alright if you learned to brake properly without relying on the ABS system & used 'cadence' braking...

Remove the ABS module fuse and use a GPS for vehicle speed indication.
You could even put a switch in the cabin to remotely turn the module off for temporary disable.

Some habits are hard to break. When I learned to drive, ABS was not invented yet (late sixties). Cadence WAS the way I was trained, and I still do it although all the vehicles have ABS. Frankly,....I don't like ABS. Sometimes (on the slippery surfaces especially!) I want my car to slip and slide. Years ago in MN, I owned Audi 5000CS Quatro, and that thing had a button on the dash to disengage the ABS at will. It was disengaged every winter.

I've had to find the area just before the ABS kicks in to exploit my uprated brake system, that way I know I'm not going through a brick wall...

Paramount performance here in the UK delimited my car, a .hex file was loaded and the 3 digit check box figure of 155 was replaced with 255 - oh we giggled...

i crashed my audi few times in winter because of stupid setup of the ABS and disabled it, but then i had no traction control too.

ABS and traction control is good to have, but I want to be able to disengage it when I want. It is MUCH easier to steer and brake the car on loose snow/ice, without it. To really learn how to drive on the ice/snow one should practice on the frozen lake. I know many people don't have the opportunity to do that, but I lived on the lake in MN, and MOST people that live around those lakes (Minnesota - The Land of 10000 Lakes!), drive over them in the winter to "create a shortcut" and/or to avoid the traffic. A car with disconnected ABS/traction is a LOAD of fun on the frozen lake. Maneuvers and the vehicle behavior learned, and practiced on that surface, come REALLY handy on the frozen freeways/side roads.

In that case it could probably be done quite easily, maybe even with IDS/SDD...just need to plop the modified file in the right folder and then reflash the ECU...

Hi,

As a matter of interest, what could one expect the top speed to be in an otherwise 'standard' XJR if it was delimited?

I have to say, I've never had the opportunity to safely take mine over 140MPH and that was bloody fast!

Cheers....

I read somewhere that they top out at around 170mph,
I've had mine to the limiter at 155mph it was still accelerating and had revs left, but the faster you want to go the more it's gonna cost if you get caught...

At about 250 kmh it shifts from 4th to 5th gear and its stops around 258, at this point the car has about 1000 rpm left...
If you have enough power i think you could reach real
300 kmh

Here in Germany is no limit on the "Autobahn"

Gearing allows for 202mph (6150 rpm in 5th)

Motor Trend says de-limited top speed of around
175mph. The top speed of the 4.0 V8 (290bhp) is listed
as 150mph, but DavidN in DE says his has been to 155mph
limited in his XJ Sport. That car, having 7000rpm of
engine, would have a higher top speed gearing wise I'm
sure. It would need 450hp to even get over 180mph though,
by my reckoning.

Too bad everyone is so far away - UK, Switzerland. I wish I was in Europe too, dang it.

Cambo, do you know of anyone on the West Coast (USA) that has the SSD and is able to "raise the bar" on the speed limiter?

Where the hell in CA are you going to risk 155+. I did it once on the 5 around camp Pendelton at 3am in the morning, In AZ there are less cops but its still go to jail time...

Why does the dog lick its nuts? Because it can. That's why I want to have the option of higher top speed. Following your logic I should reset the limiter to 99 mph.

I gonna try standing 1mile again next summer. Last Sept I got officially 149mph
Last car of the video from 14:29. First 1/4mile was 13.55. If the 155mph limiter has been deactivated in my car I try to reach 165mph+ with extra power. It's of course far away from the max speed of the car.

Tirefriar, I men't no dis-respect, I love doing what I'm not supposed to do too.
but there are so few places to really stretch the legs on these cars, and CA is about the least friendly of the ones in the US.
Unless you have friends with an airbase runway to use it's kind of mute.
Around 1991 in LA I was involved with some guys that had access to light planes and a helicopter, we would drive out to Barstow around shift change time for the CHP, use the planes to check for traffic and cops and run out on I15, I've seen 190mph on a freeway for short bursts, it's frightening..and CHP were not happy, we would get pulled over on the way back to LA and basically told if we get caught by them they will crush the cars and we would spend time in jail. I relate this story for 1 reason, I've done it and it's dangerous so I speak from experience. I also did the silverstate the same year the couple in the Ferrari died, little mistakes cause big problems.

For a big heavy car with the aerodynamics of wardrobe, being able to achieve 170MPH is quite something!

Can't help thinking though that the car would want to lift off the tarmac without any additional downforce spoilers and the like.

My bad, Roger. I appreciate you sharing the experience and your advice. I've always hated rev limiters. To me they are equivalent of federalized speedometers.

The 290bhp 4.0L XJ8 is booked to reach 150 mph, so with 370bhp in the XJR you're looking somewhere in the region of 165-170mph. I've seen 170mph mentioned elsewhere too...

However, I live in the UK so I've never been over 70mph

I shouldn't say this......I went MANY times on my bike 150+ (on ZX11 160+). It helps to have friends in uniform that owe you some BIG favors,.....just in case. I was NEVER pulled over at that speed. Few times I had a friend with me (in uniform, and on his official bike), and we did wide open runs, and clocked the bikes with the radar gun.

Fun times.
