Default Detail lacking in JTIS - is it there in ALLDATA?

After a thorugh study of JTIS, I find that detail on the engine is almost non-existent. There's nothing on the internals, that I can find.

Does anyone know whether the ALLDATA subscription for the XJ8 has this kind of detail that I'm seeking? I'm especially interested in things like the timing chain tensioners, but I'm hoping for the kind of detail that, at least, a Chilton's manual would have for most other brands.

I don't want to invest in the ALLDATA subscription if it's just a mirror of the limited data in JTIS. Anybody have experience with ALLDATA here?

My limited experience with AllData is that it is based on JTIS with additional diagnosis/repair narrative.

There is a great pictorial on replacing tensioners here:

Other links can be found on the XK8/R forum under the FAQ sticky.

I have several cars registered with ALLData and by far my wifes '02 XJR is the one with the least amount of data.

I have my Benz and there isn't anything I can't find, but the Jag if there is anything it is limited. Many items are simply the hrs required for the repair.

Before the XJR my wife had an '02 X-Type and there was more information available, so I think it depends on the year and model of Jag. For $20 it's worth investigating.

My JTIS has the instructions for replacing the primary and secondary tensionsers. (Version 1.3, so it's pretty old.)

The trick with JTIS is that some of the procedures are only listed under the first year the subsystem was introduced, and these procedures are not repeated in the sections for subsequent years. So for NA V8 procedures look under 1998 or 1999, for SC V8's, look under 1999.

For example, to find the secondary NA V8 tensioners--

Select XJ, 1998 (or 1999)
Click powertrain
Click basic engine
Click removal and installation
Scroll down and click "Timing chain tensioner (secondary) 4.0L NA"

The instructions aren't quite as good as the pictorial guides on the net, but the procedures are there.

Thanks, David. I'll try this when I get home to my JTIS installed computer tonight. You've been a great help. I'll post what I discover.

Okay, I've worked back through the XJ8 years in JTIS and have found everything I wanted to know, so far. Info on the 4.0 chain tensioners was under 1999 year model.

Thanks so much for pointing out this simple but somewhat hidden 'feature', DavidB.

Happy to help!

It took me a long time to get used to the JTIS navigation, I was tempted more than once to throw it away.

Seconded, thanks David. Although I don't have a pressing need to use my JTIS at the moment I'm sure your tip will come in handy in future
