Default Does anyone know...

For sure.. if you can simply swap out the ECU from one XJR to another without any programming issues. Assuming the ECU came from the same year and model?

I know for sure you cannot unless you were to change keylock tumblers too. You will need the key transponder married to the ecu by the dealer software.

Actually, you can make another ECM run the car, but it will never be 100% "right". For instance, at that point you'll have a car that will never pass a Gov't required inspection because it will have the wrong VIN # in the module. If you try to program it to correct the VIN, you will have a brick.

A module with the correct part number can be made to operate the car, by running the immobilization app in SDD to sync the security system so the PATS System will allow cranking and fueling.

Cheers,

So, Steve:
What does the dealer do to make the new ECU "right"?

A new unused ECM is programmed as a new module. Doing that burns things like the VIN, PATS keys and wheel size into the new part. From then on, the only thing that can be done is configuration changes. If it is ever again programmed like it's a new, blank module, it's toast. It can be moved to a comparable car, but all you can do is sync the PATS and security system so the car will start and run.

In other words, there is no way to make a used ECM "right" in another car.

Make sense??

Yes, but wow...
I guess that only screws you if you have emission control testing or you sell the car, huh?
