Default Are the door lock buttons removable (unscrewable?)

Does anyone have knowledge or first hand experience removing (from a XJ8 sedan, circa 2001) the chrome push down - pull up door lock buttons? I've tried, unsuccessfully to unscrew both front and rear, counterclockwise using only hand power with a rubber jar lid helper. I'm reluctant to try with pliers in case they in fact are NOT supposed to be removed. Any advice would be appreciated.

Why do you want to remove them? I have had the doors and locks apart a couple times, and there's no need to remove the knobs.

No door or lock work planned at this time. I'm considering replacing them (the door lock buttons) with a different style, IF they are removable.
