Question Door making loud-knocking-noise while opening at both 2 open-positions

What causes this?

As the door opens each of the 2 "open-positions" (half and full open) make a loud knocking noise, upon closing from full-open, the same noise is heard while passing the half-open point.

It is a scary sound, like the door is gonna fall off

Your door check arm going to fail and will tear thru the hinged side of the door.

Thank, that the was very helpful

It appears that my door is intact, at least the parts visible while the hinge is still attached, should I expect metal damage underneath the bracket?

If it is the metal cracking, can I continue to use the same bracket after reinforcing the door? This would save disassembling the door panel.

No, I would not continue to use the existing check arm.

The check arms on the driver door break not long after they start making noise.
When they do break, they will punch through.

They have a power spring that will cause damage when any part of check arm weakens or breaks.

Based on my experience and others on the forum, I would not continue to open and close that car door unless I removed the check arm.

You need to remove the foam grommet and door panel, then unbolt and remove the check arm before any damage happens (even if damage has occured, you should remove the check arm).

You can still use the door without the check arm in place (not as easy since the door will not stay open without the check arm) until you get a new check arm installed.

The photo in Post# 2 was taken after the door panel and the door check arm was removed (it is a camera shot showing the damage as viewed from inside of the door).

Can I just unscrew the two exposed bolts to release the check arm tension rather than remove the check arm so that I can safely use the door until I am able to get it fixed properly?

You might be able to unscrew the bolt and nut that attaches the end of the check arm to the front pillar, then unscrew the 2 nuts on the mounting studs.

I am not sure what will happen when the nuts on the mounting studs are remove. The spring in the check arm may still have a lot of tension and might break something inside the door.

Also when the check arm is released and will probably fall somewhere inside the door and maybe be in the way of the window operation. Or it might disturb some of the wiring inside the door.

When our check arm broke and we removed the door panel, we found an extra door module in the bottom of the door. It turned out to be why we were having an issue with the driver door window not going all the way.

I have been wondering about a slight creaking noise (and a low clung as it moves through the positions) from my driver side door, sounds like I want to grease something. Is this the check arm starting to wear? Is there a R&R process to maintain the check arms? Thanks all.
