Default drivers Mirror

hi guys someone kindly broke the drivers mirror on my 51 xj8..luckily replacement used parts are only around £35...my question is can i fit the "auto fold" mirror in the place of the existing "push back by hand when I can be bothered" variety? (they are the same cost used) ?

you probably could put an auto-folding mirror in place of a non-auto-folding mirror, but in my opinion, that mechanism is extra weight and you are also consuming parts that someone with auto-folding mirrors already fitted could need.

I think you need to check if the car has the 'memory' option was installed by Jaguar, (you can set seat/wheel positions from the drivers door switchpack)...then there's two relays to install in the passenger heal board area.

I need a powerfold drivers door mirror, where are you buying them for £35? I have the standard fold mirror if interested.

hi guys
thanks for the responses
Yeah I do have the memory thingy fitted!

In reply to your comment JaguarXJR02.
I don't think its really valid
extra weight ? what like 4oz extra? I can't see any cat struggling to haul that around can you?

The fact that using parts others might want has got to be the worst reason for NOT upgrading ones pride and joy!

Sean B
(ok last I saw was £41 inc p&p)

They are plentifull on ebay......the amount varies from day to day (been looking daily for a week) but I have seen over 15 around 5 of which were fold back!
I'll probably go for the original push back (might upgrade later when I have more informatin)

again, thanks all for ya input

I'd like the powerfold fitted to mine, it has everything else bar this function. Which is annoying because I have to fold them in when I park at work, and most times when I park in public places. I'll also get chrome covers at some point, but priorities lie with my other car right now.

This is an option that not many cars in the US have -- I remember asking about it for my 98 and in was not available for US market?

Did they install it on the Super V8s or the R100's to the US?

Sooooo, again Sorry for the dumb question, but how can I check if any of mine have this option?
I do have an XJR 100 and a VDP Supercharged and a US XJR. I would like to know if any of them have this option.

Put the selector switch for the mirrors in the centre and press the down button on the pad. They should fold in-I think that is how it is done.

Hi guys
just found this on a diff forum might help (damn I just ordered my manual one!!!!..and I would REALLY like the electrochromatic feature)

There are 2 different kits,one for X300 ( XJ6 1994 to 1997)and one for X308 (XJ8 1998 to 2003)

The XJ8 kit, part # JLM 20460 also add electrochromatic glass on both sides ( controled by the interior rear view mirror),while the XJ6 kit, part # JLM 21355, only have the fold feature.

"A few years back, the price for the XJ6 was $392 and $495 for the XJ8.

I did the XJ8 on my 01 XJR and it's plug-and-play and very simple.

Just remove the door trim, the little plastic piece on the top front of the door to access the mirror bolt, remove old mirror, remove the pinted/chrome cover from old mirror, install on new ones, put new ones in and you're done.
A relay that goes under the fuse box under the rear seat, driver side, is supplied but most US cars already have the relay.
The "fold" switch is already there.
You put the mirror selector ( left/right) in neutral (center position) and you use the position switch ( the round one) to fold in by pressing it toward you (as to angle the glass in) and to fold out it's the opposite.

Well
Just got my new (used) mirror and it turned out to be a powerfold version..it kinda committed me to trying it ...

I literally popped off the scratched back cover pushed on my own one...screwed the mirror in place (one screw) popped two black relays into the empty sockets (which I got from a local breakers yard, but ouch, at £10 each) that are behind the foot panel under the left rear seat....and it works ....so I ordered the nearside mirror too.

The passenger mirror was £35 plus delivery and vat which drove it up to £56...still damn cheap! and electrochromatic into the bargain

I think I can say THANK YOU to the idiot that broke my mirror!

The whole project (ie both mirrors and relays and a total of about 2 hours easy labour) £96.40..

if you fancy doing the same
this is where I got the second mirror

Not sure of the part number only know they are the same black ones used in vaious place around the car (about 16 depending what goodies are fitted) ...when the other ones arrive I will look at them and try to give more info.

In the compartment there are 4 relay holders 2 nearest the door hold relays for the the door lock relay and the air con isolate.
