Default A-drum BANG

Hey gents,

so, as it looks my tranny decided to die today (see what did you do to your car today thread)...

Now, I don't want a replacement tranny. Nor a rebuild. Nor a new one. I'm going to do mine...

What would be cleverest to do? I have already found the suppliers of reinforced A drums. What parts should I do? I want to keep the financial "hole" as small as possible.

I know the tranny has to come out (duh...) and the pump out. So that means at least a new pump seal (edge) and seal around the torque convertor (between convertor and pump). New sump gasket and filter are also obvious as well as new fluid. Would new clutches be clever? And also a new circlip (that, what snaps out)?

Thanks for your input guys!

Damien

PS: Any tips on removing the tranny? I guess it isn't an engine out job, as there is enough space in the engine bay to lean the engine back to rest on the bulk head... Are all the bolts accessable from below?

It is hard to tell if you need clutch friction discs until you get it apart. You can get a set of 6 for under $50. A gasket rebuild kit is about $160, gou will only use about 1/3 of the kit. The the codt of drum, filter, and transmission fluid. Don't have time right now to go through the process, but tjr first thing I do is soak all exhaust bolts and especially the four on side where the cats bolt to the exhaust manifold. The engine will support itself.

Where would it be best to undo the bolts of the torque converter? Through the starter opening or maybe even though the lower opening?

There's a stack of documents kicking round the forum on rebuilding these, so it's admirable you're tackling it yourself.
You must be aware of the cause of the fault? So an initial job would be inspecting the valve block assembly for cracks. Address the cause and not the resultant damage first.

If this is the case then you'll need another block, which maybe easy to source in Germany? A used part will need a TransGo kit fitting, then it's on with removal and rebuild.
The circlip will be free along with bits of A drum and will need removing, discs are down to tolerances and that info should be around on the web.

You don't need a pump gasket/seal if you leave the pump ON the bellhousing (don't remove the bolts that ONLY hold the pump). Stand the gearbox on it's tail to keep frictions/steels in line.

Lots of write-ups.
