Default Electric exhaust cut out install with pics!

We finished the install of the electric exhaust cut outs on my XJR.

All I can say is "WOW!" I love the sound with them fully open and closed it sounds just like my original "civilized" XJR. I haven't played with them partially open yet because they need to cure a bit to allow them to seal.

I will post a video with sound as soon as I can.

See my post here for pics of the entire job: https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...ut-outs-71960/

A quick head'sup on the job - the thicker lines that look a matter of 3 inches from hot exhaust gas a fuel in/fuel return lines, and the thinner ones are brake fluid, neither of which like being heated.....I just see 'bomb'.....

I'll suggest at least a very good heat shield fabricating over that area.

We saw that too when we were doing the install. Ordered some sheet aluminum to go over that area.

About the cost - $400 for the cut outs and about 4-6 hours to fabricate and install, whatever your local labor rate may be.

Also, I just came back from a run around town, these are awesome!

I'm looking forward to seeing/hearing the video too! Make sure it is done from both inside and outside the car so we can hear what it is like, and how it sounds when driving.

No doubt Sean B will roll his eyes and begin looking for a blunt object to smack me in the face with when he reads this, but I am very interested in installing a similar system on my XJ8.

Yes, +1 on the video requests. But one thing, I know
your XJRs cannot rev beyond 3k at idle, so please give it some
revs! I can never tell when the cars are sitting still how it
really sounds.

Looks like a cool install!

I've been tempted by these for a while now, but really wanted to hear them on a similar car. Any chance of a video? I hope they sound great as I love the idea of being able to turn them on / off at whim.

I'll get a video up ASAP, but the deal is that they can sound stock to "race car" and anything in between. Open them a little for a rumble or all the way for a roar. This effect might be hard to capture on video.

When mine are open it literally shakes the seats. Closed it sounds like any stock XJR.

My wife says she has never seen me smile so much while driving any of my cars.

Thanks Vector,

I like the idea of a nice V8 rumble, but I would still like to have a quiet crusier for long journeys. These seem like the ideal solution.

Vector,
I know it is an old thread, but I also know you are still around .

I had my car on the lifter last week to prepare for cutouts in the same fashion as you did, thanks for all the pics.

However, the guy suggested to have a H-pipe welded up, somewhere before the cutouts where both pipes are spreading.
He told me such H-pipe will increase the rumble "american" style, where an x-pipe should give more of a whine.

Did you (or anyone else) ever consider this?
Do you think it will add anything to what you already have, especially at partial open position?

Thanks,
Eric

My feeling is that it is not necessary, I am very pleased with the sound from partial thru full open.

But.....it wouldn't be that difficult to do and probably not cost much "while you are in there" so you may want to give it a go.

And for everyone asking for a video - it would really be pointless since you can change the sound with a slight bump of the switch - too much range of sound to try to capture on video/audio. It goes from "OEM quiet" to "race car loud" and anything in between!

Take my word for it - do it! You will love it!

I added a few pics from the install just in case the other site with all the installer's pics ever goes away:

Great, yeah, perhaps give it a try, the guy seemed to know what he was talking about, and it will not be the first cutout he will install.
Thanks a lot, now first need to fix my suspension ...

Have you thought about attaching this to the WOT switch or the butterfly in the throttle body? The idea being it stays in oem unless full throttle is applied and then it opens, so quite until you punch it and make it roar.

Waaay too complicated! And you do lose a little low end torque with this mod, but it is not about power, it is about FUN! Face muscles hurting from smiling...and a grin that will take a few hours to go away too!

And, believe me, you don't want them open all the way very often. I am talking seat shaking, neighbors calling the law, scaring dogs and granny two blocks away loud!

Some of the most complaints from the Ferrari guys are generated by their vacuum operated cut outs that seem to malfunction over time.

Just bump the toggle or hold it down for wide open.

KISS - easy peasy!

+1 here.
They actually sell vacuum operated valves here more than electric ones.
But I want to be in control at any time, the silence of the VDP is as much appreciated as a roar sometimes.

I had the mid and rear mufflers out for work a little while ago, it's not exactly how it would sound but it gives an idea.

So, this is with the very first resonator still installed?
