Default Engine Options

1998 jaguar XJ 8. New transmission. New paint.

What are my options for a new engine?

I am in too deep to this car not to have a game plan for the engine.

What are rpthe best alternatives?

PLUG AND PLAY options are
XK8 1997/98
XJ8 1998

AJ27 engines can be fitted with MODIFICATIONS.

From Voice of experience..
Two important things...FIRST only 1997 & 98 xj8 engines are "bolt in" engines for your car
Secondly...Find a auto salvage recycler that you can work ...with reasonably, and work out a price that you can live with for him to find you a good, preferably low-mileage engine.
Why a recycler / salvage bidder?
He is looking daily for Jag's at insurance auctions, and he is aware of options and prices that are unavailable to you. AND he can buy cheap and sell well all the other parts that you do not want, thereby reducing his net cost on the engine that you may need.

AJ27?, is that the 4.2? Ideally, getting away from the 4.0ltr would be a highly positive direction.

Are there any chevy 350 options, for example, that aren't wildly expensive?

No. Your engine is th AJ26. The 99 - 03? is the 4.0 AJ27.

There is an active thread in this section recently regarding GM small block conversion. https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/x...-option-43986/
