Default Engine Warning Light

Hi,
I've a 2001 Sovereign 4ltr and the Amber Engine Warning light has just come on. Took it to a dealer and they reckon it's either the top or bottom exhaust sensor or whatever those sensors control. They want the car for 2-3 days in case I need parts they haven't got in stock. I live in Tenerife but I'm back in the UK from 20th to 30th August. Any idea what these sensors cost and are they easy to replace as I could try to get them while I'm in the UK. Also anyone know what the sensors monitor.

Regards,

dave

They are the oxygen sensors, or O2 sensors. There are 4 of them. The upstream (first from the exhaust) and the downstream (2 each). It can run you into some money if a shop is replacing them. You can buy a code reader that will let you diagnose these types of issues - with the help of the forum and the archives.

How would I know which sensor is faulty? Also what damage could be done if they are not replaced?

Regards,

Dave

Here are some trouble code excepts. "A bank" is right side "upstream" means the first one back from the exhaust manifold.

P0131 - HO2S sense circuit low current –
A bank, upstream (1)

P0132 - HO2S sense circuit high current –
A bank, upstream (1)

These codes are a starting point for diagnosis.
If you do have a bad O2 sensor, it may cause the car to run rough and get poor gas
mileage. Also, where I live, it won't pass emissions inspection. I'm not sure about the regular safety inspection, but a check engine light is not good. Do they even have inspections in Tenerife ?

Dave:
Did they read the codes from the car by attaching a scanner to the data port on the inside of the car, or did they tell you that "off the cuff"? There are many many causes for a CEL, and from you rdescription, they simply recited one of the many causes.

And... I agree with Jim - if you want ot participate in decisions on a car's maintenance, you must get a code reader so youi know what the car thinks is wrong!

Many Thanks for the reply,

They attached a Laptop to the Car Port.

How much is a Code reader?

Regards,

Dave

Range from like 30 bucks to 250. You can go to Autozone to get codes read and printed off free. Then posting them here or search around here and you will find what they mean.

Unfortunately, Tenerife is a small island off the African coast so there is only 1 Jag dealer and very little else in terms of Jag help

Dave have you, or anyone else, now had any experience of the Tenerife Jaguar main dealer? I'm thinking of using them.

Since bringing a Jag here to Tenerife I've used two different independent garages in the south for minor things. They were recommended on Tenerife forums but they weren't that good. So I'm thinking of paying a bit more and using the Jaguar dealer.

Hi Joe

They are good and they do have someone who speaks English if you need it. You'll find the costs are very good compared with what you pay in the UK.

I have also used "Taller Aleman Heiko" in Guagacho for general servicing etc and he is also good and a cheaper alternative. Tel No 922 734316.

I'm of to UK today for 2 weeks so best of luck

Regards

Dave

Thanks, I might use Aleman Heiko if MAS don't respond to my email which I sent this morning. I didn't get the English speaker and couldn't explain it in Spanish so we agreed that I'd email.

Keep in touch, there aren't many of us. I'll pm you my email address.
