Default Front Turn Signals...On Front Or Side Of Bumper?

Probably a stupid question, but is the turn signal indicator lamp on the front or side of the front bumper? I always thought that the turn signal was the long lamp on the front of the bumper, but it has always been the shorter SIDE lamp that blinks when the signals are turned on. I have been thinking that the previous owner somehow put the wiring backwards at one point in time...then again, maybe the signal really is on the side of the bumper instead of the front.

On my 2002 XJ8 SE it's the long oval lights in the front of the bumper that flash. ----->

Here too.
The bumper side lamps are continuous, but if you have an other orange lamp in the upper fender (US cars had a grey leaper in that position), that one flashes as well..

That is what I thought...that the signal should be the bigger light and the side should be just a continuous marker light. However, my car is *** backwards. When the lights are turned on, the FRONT light is the one that is lit up and the SIDE light is what blinks when the signals are turned on. If the signals are not on, the side ones are off.

I am wondering if at some point the previous owner had the front bumper off and then mixed the wiring for the two lights...putting the signal socket into the side markers and the side marker socket into the turn signals. That is the only thing I can think of other than something wacky going on with the electrical.

The front bumper is a bit harder to reach inside then on the rear, but perhaps if you remove the front and side housings, you can reach the wires and switch them over.

I'll check later (the complete x308 bumper is in my garden) but I thought the 'side markers' were just reflectors - and not lit at all.

Well I took the markers and signal housings out. The bulbs are completely different. The side markers use those tiny T10 bulbs and the signals use the large signal bulbs. HOWEVER, the connectors for the bulb sockets are exactly the same. I take it that the previous owner crossed the wiring since the connectors are the same...thus making the signals where the side markers are and vice versa. I have since swapped the wiring around. However, a bit PO'd at the fact that now my bumper is all marked up because the turn signals would not come out. Joys of having a car that was jimmy rigged by previous owners.
