Default Gasket leak

Alright, noticed a slight gasket leak and as usual, at the most opportune time too (a couple days before I'm suppose to hit the road, figures.)

Replacing the gasket I dont see it being a problem to replace on such short notice but I have to overnight a gasket.

The question or slight confusion is this. I thought the transmission fluid of these things are suppose to be amber colored, like honey or new motor oil. Mine is the traditional red. Although there was no shifting problems at all and only came upon this leak, which wasnt there last week, because I was checking them dang suspension link things. But the fluid is red. This may be a good/bad sign meaning the transmission has been surviced at one point probably the a-drum. Now I figure if it was the wrong fluid, the tranny would have been toast by now.

What fluid that is red, is compatible with this box. Although I wouldnt mind going back to the amber (if it is even available out here) but since the red stuff is in there I wonder are they compatible (really dont have time to find a place that can do a whole flush at this moment. By the time gasket gets here, it will be thursday or if the mailman bolo it up like usual when time is an importance, maybe friday.)

Better yet, what red fluids (preferably readily available) are good for this box like the one I have in it already?

Start with telling everyone which transmission you have because you only identify your car as being XJ "series".

BTW, your power steering takes Dexron, and it is also red. Maybe one of your hoses is leaking.

Thanks Jim, but not everyone is going to go search back for such details.

Posters are reminded that giving full vehicle particulars is the key to getting quick and accurate answers.

Hi Plums
I appears that the Garage information (in each post) that is below the forum member id does not come from the Vehicle Info in About Me. It comes from "My Garage" section of the forum's member profile.

There is "About Me" that has "Vehicle Info". This a place where forum members put model year and model type information.

I looked at mine and it shows: Jaguar XJ8 2001 4 dr sedan
Your's: XJR - X308
blackwolf's: 1988 420 1988 528e 2000 vanden plas

I did a little research on how to add/change the vehicle information in the forum member "My Garage" and the drop-down menu choices for the model information for XJ (308) are:

Vanden Plas
XJ-Series
XJR-Series
XJRS-Series
XJS-Series

and maybe
Super-Series

Looks like the XJ-Series means XJ8

There is seems to be a problem with the "View User Vehicle". Mine has some of my vehicle information but when I go to "View User Vehicle" it shows "jimlombardi has not entered a description for "Bev" in the description (where it should show "2001 XJ8").

I have the 5 speed ZF tranny and I thought you had to use the special mineral oil in it that is straw colored. Something to do with the friction plates requires this expensive fluid that meets the specifications for this tranny. I could be wrong, but I think I would be worried if it had Dextron in it. Oh yeah, I have a 2001 4.0 VDP.

Hi
I found this quote from forum member Teck4Jag (Tech Certified - Jaguar master Tech) "check the fluid, if its red its dex if its a yellowish/brown colour its esso" in another thread on this forum.

I check my VW/Audi Transmission Fuild (this is the same fluid as the Esso fluid that was in our Jaguar when it was manufactured). I have on the shelf in our home and it's fluid color is yellowish/brown.

Here is a ZF524HP transmission fluid thread on this forum (look at posts 21, 19, 17):
