Gear box fault
The 5HP24 gearboxes have a fault with the forward drum but you should get the DTCs from the TCM before GUESSING at any faults. Some transmission repair shops or Jaguar dealers should be able to get the info from the module. The gearbox will default to certain gears when a fault occurs.

Our 2001 XJ8 experienced the same pattern of behavior. I am only saying your Jaguar might need a transmission rebuild or it might be something else such as a bad TCM (Transmission Control Module) or transmission fluid might be low, etc.
Serveral days after we had our transmission rebuilt, we had the "gearbox fault" come on at the stoplight.
Our mechanic did not put enough transmission fluid in it. He added another 1.5 liters.
We have had no problems after that.
Look at this my post - this will give you the details about our transmission repair:

I know this situation is very frustrating.
Wish you all the best.

If you do get it replaced, remember these trannys have synthetic oil. Not Dexron ATF. If you need it, I can get you the proper number from the oil distributor that Jag uses and save you about 60% of the Jag dealer price.
