Gear Box Fault warning
Today I was driving about 60 mph and all of a sudden the car made a loud bump and the car lurched a bit. Then the ABS and Trac Orange warning lights appeared, along with an Orange Gear Box Fault warning light. When I eventually stopped at a red light, the car seemed to have no 1st gear, although it took off sluggish, it was smooth. At the next red light I turned the car off, and when I restarted it, all warnings were gone and the car drove normally.
what is going on here?
I have seen the ABS and subsequent Trac Control warning before, but they are intermittent and always go away. I figured it was a dirty wheel sensor, as when I washed the car, it went away….but I’ve never seen the Gear Box Fault before. Scared me a little.

It should scare you, but before the fear continues, check your fluid. Next, I would have concern it could be the "A" drum, but since you are moving normally, you may have dodged a bullet. You'll see what I'm saying in the video.
If you haven't done it, you will probably want to do this kit, he mentions it in the video... https://www.ebay.com/itm/20344243816...3a51eaef1a56d8

Always of great help HH.
I actually had this very pressure valve update proactively installed about a year and a half ago, into my transmission that had been rebuilt in 2017 (approx 70k ago).
In recent months, I have noticed that REVERSE was not operating correctly on occasion, very intermittently, and especially if i parked on a declining surface, nose downward. Other than that it seems to work well.
That all being said, is it time for another rebuild in your opinion?
At the very least, I will take it to my shop and have the fluid looked at for metal shavings.
It all makes sense, with the exception of the car shifts and runs quite soothly, as good as any I have ever driven.
Today's incident was the first time I've seen that Gear Box Fault. I have seen the ABS warning maybe 5-6 times over the last year. Like I said, it always goes away, I just attributed to dirt wheel sensor(s).
Thanks man.

Did you ever get to the bottom of the Gear Box Fault light coming on? I had an odd experience today with my 2008 Vanden Plas (less than 60,000 miles on the odometer). It was a cold day here in Nova Scotia and at this time of year our roads have lots of frost heaves and pot holes. When I went over a bump (I could hear and feel it) at about 40 mi/hr two yellow warning messages lit up on the instrument cluster "cruise not available" and "gear box fault". I continued to drive and the car shifted smoothly. I noticed I couldn't engage the 'sport' mode by pressing the button next to the shifter, but other than that the car ran fine. When I got to my destination I turned the car off for a minute and then turned it back on, and voila - these warnings were gone. On the drive home I engaged and disengaged the 'sport' mode and it worked fine. The fault warning hasn't reappeared this week, but I'm left wondering if the bump in the road and a loose wire/sensor caused this?
Update on the Gear Box Fault / Cruise Unavailable warning messages that came on today. Someone in one of the posts above mentioned that even when these warning lights go out, there should be a code stored, so I used my Jaguar Code Reader and ran a manual check on the Transmission Control Module. It had one code stored: "P1974 Batter Supply Malfunction". Do I have a short somewhere, or do I possibly just have a weak battery (it is five years old and this has been an exceptionally cold winter). I assume the TCM, like the ECM checks the voltage it is receiving at the start of an ignition cycle, and if the battery is weak? A few years ago I had the dreaded "Park Brake Failure" light come on intermittently on my wife's XJ8. A new battery fixed that problem.
frcraig, this is the X308 (97’-03’) forum. You’ll want to post in the X350/356 forum. If I were you, I’d ignore it unless it happens again. I know that nobody wants a breakdown but, you can go down a rabbit hole and still may not be any closer to solving it. Just wait until it happens again (hopefully not) then address it.
