Default Gearbox fault

Hello Everyone I am after some help and would like to pick your collective brains. I have a Jaguar Auto. 3.2 XJ8 which is showing the message "Gearbox Fault". It is having a great deal of difficulty pulling away, then there is an almighty thump and the car shoots forward. As it accelerates it is OK it also is fine when reversing. Does, this mean that I am going to need a new gearbox, or is their any other reason for this fault i.e can a repair be done on the gearbox? I would be very grateful for any help given. It is a lovely old car (year 2000) and I would be very sad to have to get rid of it, but there is a limit to how much you can spend on a car as old as this. Thanks Barry

Welcome to the forum Barry,

I've moved your question from General Tech Help to X308 forum. Members here with the same model will be able to help.

Please follow this link New Member Area - Intro a MUST - Jaguar Forums - Jaguar Enthusiasts Forum to the New Member Area - Intro a MUST forum and post some info about yourself and your vehicle for all members to see. That's the classic symptom of A drum failure. Use the search and you will be provided with many threads discussing the problem and the pros and cons of repair vs. replacement.
