gearbox issue. swap out or repair
Hi All
i have recently had an issue with the gearbox in my 2003 4.2 xjr supercharger.
gearbox fault light followed by jerky gear changes and no reverse gear limp mode. car drove fine upto this point with no noises or indications.
i took it to a local garage after reading numerous post here decided to start with the obvious. check and change the automatic transmission fluid and filter.
Drained oil and removed the pan and found small fine iron filings and slightly larger swarf in the bottom of the pan.see photos below.
I have a couple of questions on how to best move forward.
ive been quoted starting around £1850+vat to repair existing gearbox i believe my gearbox idenification to be "ZF6HP26"( anyone know if that is correct?) and is used in other vehicles such as mercs, land rover discoveries and BMWs as well as other jaguars,
if i buy a used 2nd hand box will it swap straight out or would i need to change the torque converter also, , can i use the old t.c or will one that comes with a t.c still attached work if it came from a different vehicle such as a 3.0ltr s type or a BMW.
as a new box is out out of my price range what would be the best option and what are the pitfalls ?
any advice would be much appreciated before i spend a load of money.
thanks

This is the X308 forum. You’ll want to post in the X350 area. However, I’d get a used one personally. They are normally a stout transmission but they have their little issues. Whatever you decide on, be sure to replace the rear main oil seal and cap seal 3” above it. Also flush out the transmission oil cooler prior to install.
