Default Getting great engine access......

I don't know if anyone on the list has already used this trick, but there is a very simple way to get fantastic access to the engine compartment on the X308 cars. It allows for the hood to tilt forward some 135 degrees with no damage . I've used this trick a few times- basically you can even pull the engine out without taking off the hood...

The trick is simple- remove the upper front grill and swap the XJ8 hood struts for a pair of (even worn out) XK8 hood struts. Then the hood can be pivoted forward so much further and the struts hold it. When done, swap the struts back and put the grill back on...

It worked for me!!!!

Hmm, I've been thinking of replacing my hood struts on my XKR but they work nicely, this may have made my decision! I love the service mode position on my XKR, and wondered about such on my XJ.

Nice post! Also, very pretty rims!

Wouldn't it be less work to just remove the hood?

Hmm...that is why I like the hood on my Mercedes. It can swing up to 90 degrees from the normal 45 degrees and it makes such a big difference when working on the engine.

Good one ;o)
That's why I fabricated a pair of 1/4" steel rods to fit where the struts are mounted....allows forward tilt of bonnet/hood for easy access to most things ;o)

Same on my older Volvos I had. Open hood/bonnet normally, all is okay. To open to 90° simply turn two little levers on the hinges and it opens up 90°. The 960 was even easier, find the gas struts and simply press the red clip and done...

The limited access gets on my nerves on my Jags... XJS and XJ.

Removing the hood is at least a two-person job, ideally three. XJsc-guy's trick makes increased access an easy 1-person job with none of the hassles of getting the gaps right again after reinstalling the hood.

Well done, XJsc-guy!

I only wish this trick would work on our XJ40, but unfortunately I think the leaper would bash his nose on the top of the grille.

Cheers,

Don
