Default Goodbye 308.

As most of you might know i have a XJ8 2001. Loved that car, and would like to thank each and everyone of you that has helped me out to upkeep the car. The oil pump went out and motor started a rod knock. Says low oil pressure and just had to park it. Now i don’t know if i will rebuild or put a new motor in but my journey on Jaguars will still continue as i’ve got an Stype R. i might have to rebuild the motor since i love the 308’s so much but time will til. and til then have a good ride in you 308’s!

Oh man, sorry to hear that dude. You've done a lot to her and it would be sad if you didn't pursue a rebuild or another motor.

Here's a search results link from Carparts.com near your area... Search Results
Carguts in Blacksburg SC has been very good to me and remember, these are scrap yards, everything is negotiable. Here's a list to peruse, many below 90k and a $1000 and less.

well, it’s been a rough 6 months. just seeing the car parked in the garage not driven isn’t a good sight. how long is it to r&r the motor? there’s one not too far from me it is an ‘03 so that means the timing chain tensioners have been revised, he’s asking $850. what’s the time of the removal and difficulty level?

Hi omgimali,

I haven't had to swap engines in an X308 but I recently had the V6 out of a Mercedes SLK350 and I think it took about 5 hours to remove the engine. However, on that car I didn't have to remove the radiator or hood, and I had a helper. Even more recently I had the L6 out of a 2011 BMW 328i, and removal took about 8 hours, but that included first removing the cylinder head for inspection (no hood or radiator removal on that car either).

On your X308, I would recommend removing the hood and radiator, especially if this is your first engine swap. This means you will need at least one helper and preferably two to help with the hood, and at least one to help with the engine removal and installation. I would guess 10-12 hours for removal your first time, and somewhat less for installation.

Before installing the replacement engine, I would strongly advise you to replace the crankshaft oil seals, the oil pan gasket, the camshaft cover gaskets, dipstick tube seal, and any other gaskets that will be more difficult or impossible to replace once the engine is installed. Maybe even the water pump and valley hoses. Consider replacing your octopus hose since it will never be easier. Carefully check your transmission input shaft seal and consider replacing it preemptively.

I'm sure we have members who have been through this, so hopefully some of them will chime in.

Cheers,

Don

I know that this is waaaayyyyyy easier than my Corvette swap. The bellhousing bolts and such are oh see easy to get to compared to the Corvette. I did that job myself, including sliding the hood onto some 2x4's, getting under it and muscling it to a pre-built stand. I was a bit younger then also.

Hey Don, could he, and what might be the difficulty, to drop the front frame where it goes into the subframe and just roll it out to say? Then do the swap? He could even do the subframe bushings with it out.

Fantastic. Does anyone have shop time hours? Me and my buddy will be doing this project, we have pulled his motor many times on his F-body camaro we replaced it from the 5.7 to the 6.0 to finally a 5.3 (250 shot nitrous will get to ya).

Somewhere in the forums are some videos of a member doing something similar, maybe on an X300. I think he disassembled the entire front end so he could basically roll the engine and transmission out on the front subframe. I think the title was something like Engine Removal in Two Hours.

Here's an even faster method I just found on YouTube, though I do not recommend it:

Cheers,

Don

motorcarman or Brutal may be able to give you shop time hours, but most mechanics will figure real hours at some multiple of the book time.
