Default Help! Car won't start - Hoping i didn't fry something

Hey guys

Having an issue with my 2001 XJR. The battery had died from sitting so i boosted it and got it started and running. Ran it for a while but when I shut it off again, it wouldn't start. So i put the charger on the battery and let it sit for a while. Went out again a while later, switched the charger mode to Start and tried to start the car. Something went buzzap and it hasn't even turned over since. Battery is fully charged but the engine won't turn over. When i turn the key to Start it makes a little zapping noise, almost like a tiny electric shock. I thought i may have somehow blown a fuse but i checked every fuse in the trunk fuse box and they're all good. Really cant afford to have Jag look at it right now so I'm hoping you guys can give me some idea as to what's happened. To make matters worse, it died half way out the garage door and now i can't get the door shut. It's damn cold outside and I'm ready to burn the damn car to keep warm at this point.

Any help you could provide would be GREATLY appreciated!!

Dave

Dave,

I've moved your thread from XJ ( X351 ) to X308 forum.

As I have posted before, I have MEASURED 36 volts on the Start function when there was no load connected on an old battery charger I have. If the vehicle battery has a open cell, that will look like no load, so you could have 36 volts on the car's system.
I hope it was something cheap you zapped.

Here is information I gathered together from some of the forum's posts on "no-start".

It should be noted that if Fuse 5 (in Engine Compartment Fusebox - Left Hand Side) has blown, the starter motor will not operate and the Engine Control Module will not receive an ignition supply. Consequently, the engine will not start, even with a slave battery.

Note - All the JEPEG images can be maxiumized by clicking on the image when the Dropbox webpage opens

Here is a JPEG file showing the various fuse & relays that might cause "no-start"

also there is a mega fuse in the trunk the comes loose and melts (located just left of the battery in front of the spare).. giving you intermitent no starts .. the problem isnt a security problem.. more a electrical problem make sure the P is illuminated.

Here is a JPEG file showing Mega Fuse info (diagrams and photo):

Check the False Bulkhead (starter feed cable on the right side of your engine bay). Just inside from the fender, on the passenger's side, you will find a big cable with a rubber boot on the end. Check the connections at this point.

CHECK the battery connections and starter motor. Make sure all connections are in good condition and secure. If all connections are sound, INSTALL a new battery lead.
