Default Help with unusual noise from rear....

Hi All,

I have a 98 VDP which I've restored to almost 100%. I have a few more things to work on like the squirrel cage cleaning and startter replacement. For now my main concern is a squeeking or chirping noise eminating from somewhere towards the rear of the car. I know it's not the wheel bearing as I have replaced the right front wheel bearing. A simple test is to spin the wheels freely and both rear wheels do without restriction (gear in neutral). My concern is whether it's the rear differential or drive axels. The noise seems to get louder after driving around town for about 45 minutes. Prior to me purchasing it in October 2010, the car has been sitting for over 2 years. I don't know when the last time the rear differntial was serviced.

I also recently replaced the rear shocks and brakes but the noise still remains. I can't do any road tests for the moment as I am awaiting my ABS module from modulemasters. Any suggestions at this point would be greatly appreciated.

maybe light spray of lithium/moly grease on all bushes. It could even be the rear exhaust hanger bushes. I'd maybe nip up the nuts and bolts holding the new shocks.

Thanks SeanB. I do know that the noise coincides with the speed of the car. As I increase speed, the noise gets louder. I will inspect and grease all bushes so as to begin the process of elimination. You wouldn't happen to know what sounds a differential makes when it is due for service would you?

I was able to listen to rear differential noises from YouTube. I can say that the noise I hear doesn't sound like a differential issue. I'm starting to suspect my brake sensors.

it isn't a big job to pull the pads and check. You can probably tell just by taking the rear wheels off to inspect the pads for wear.

I have this same issue coming from my rear left wheels area, its quite annoying. Also matching with this sound is a wobble from the rear left which gets quite prevalent at speed. I have a feeling it might be the driveshaft U-joint. I just picked up my XJR and was blown away by its suspension design where the driveshaft also acts as the upper control arm.
