high pinched whining noise from engine,
Is this noise continous or a 'cheep, cheep, cheep, sort of sound?
If the latter you may want to change the serpentine belt.

pulley bearings, s/c belt or aux belt, compressor bearing, alternator bearing, power steering pump etc etc.....where does it sound like it's coming from, does it go away when the car is warmed up?
yes, noise is continuous
serpentine belt was also changed 2 years ago,I doubted if it failed prematurely. I will looking around some other areas.
to Sean. yes, this winter has been harsh and it might related to cold engine start.
a separate thread I just opened, I talked about the battery drain. thanks

I would pull the SC belt and see what happens, then pull the other belt and see how it sounds. Obviously you can't run it for more than 30 seconds or so like that but it may narrow down the source of the noise.
Then while the belt is off, spin each pulley by hand, feeling for drag, rough bearings, and noise.
