Just gently pull it off from the outside edges. Should be able to use just your hands.

Lower the steering wheel all the way down, tach and fuel opening has a "ledge" (the trim is not even with the instrument cluster). You can feel this ledge with your finger, and you will understand. Place your thumbs on that ledge (at the bottom), and gently pull outward. Pull EVENLY on both sides at the same time. The wood trim will come off. When you are about to put it back, a dab of vaseline on the grommets, will make it slide in much easier, and ease the removal in the future.

I should add that there are compressible steel clips that hold it in place. You will see after you have removed it.

Just pull evenly and it will come out, not for the feint of heart

Actually it is not the burl wood that you are pulling on. The wood is laminated to some metalization of some kind that gives it rigidity.
No big deal after you do it the first time. Follow Danial's directions to put the steering column down first.

Success! thank you for the help.

Odd though it seemed that a few clips were not in the top slots. Where can one get more of the meatl clips?

Thanks

Mine was that way too, I am not sure that there is supposed to be a clip in each slot.
Maybe make it quite difficult to remove if not impossible if there was.
