If you disassemble the center console(with armrest), and the J-GAte console (after take off the lever knob), you will see the two switches at the bottom of the selector rod. One is for the right side of the J-gate (P-R-N-D), and one for the left side (2-3-4). There is two bosses at the lower end of the rod, which are matching with the switches holes. Maybe one of these bosses jumped out it's hole, and you get limp mode.

sweet!! ill be sure to get on that today, im so excited i am going to pick it up today in a few hours, i guess i will have it towed home rather than taking a chance in that limp mode, take the time and work on it with care. i will be posting a lot of pictures on this thread or start some new ones on how to take the console apart etc, im going to look up information on that now so this way i dont damage anything. thanks again!

Exclamation okay guys!

i did the transmission service and this is what i found in the pan

Looked like a leak to me, coming from the front seal...

It was low on fluid and Magnets were covered in clutch material. the transmission had 123,000 and thats pretty good considering most of them (from what i hear) have pre-mature A-Drum failure.

Filter did all it could

So i decided to put it all back together in hopes there was some clutch material left so i could at least have fun with the car over the weekend!!!!

But it did the same thing and popped into limp mode being the clutches were pretty much burnt toast!!! and got the Code of P1722

So instead of getting disappointed i got rather excited and decided to change the spark plugs being they were not changed for who knows how long!!!
I noticed a little oil on every other coil boot, so im sure ill need to do valve covers.
But the engine is Healthy and waiting! so i downloaded all the PDF files on how to remove / rebuild / The transmission and clutch assembly from ZF. so i will be buying a ZF5HP24 Transmission rebuild kit with the reinforced
A-Drum for $500 USD on line (hopefully soon)
so i can get to work on taking down the transmission and getting this baby on the road again!!! Mean time she will get her rest until she is once again risen! for i will not be at the mercy of a shop that might cut corners
I will create a new thread when i take on this task, should take a couple of days with the right tools and assistance of my brother.
until next time my friends!

Hey Jag,

I will look forward to your rebuild as I would be willing to take on that task in the future should I decide to pick up an XJ8 with trans issues!

thanks its totally worth it especially if you find one with low miles and has all service records and if its selling cheap, my brother works on transmissions so it will be a big help as he has the tools he can lend me.
