Bob here again. After weeks of chasing my ignition problem I do believe I have ti down to the coil packs. I replaced one that kept showing up as a misfire and put in an OEM coil. No codes, no check engine and no Restricted Performance for 5 days in a row. MEchanic says I have some after market (which the OEM replaced) and some OEM mixed. It has been suggested this is not good. Dealer says OEM only. Started shopping around. Wide range of prices. So I look to forum wisdom:

OEM all the way, the Denso units are calibrated to the ecu, a significant item. The best way is to grab a full set off a scrap engine for cheap money - junk the non eom items and box the rest as spares.
I need a new coil as well...
What's the expected lifespan for coils? Used ones can be had very cheap, but new are very expensive.
I'm happy to buy a couple of new OEM ones if that's the best way, but if used will do the job for 1/4 the price, then that would be great

On my XKR, my coolant tank took out the coil below it. I shopped around and actually found Napa sold the OEM denso in their echlin line. I looked at it and the part number and absolutely everything was OEM. I paid $90 new but I get a huge discount.
And the million dollar question... where should we buy from?
For future reference, the part number for 4 wire ignition coils is LNE1510AB
SNG Barratt have genuine ones for either £62.37 or US$106.03 (more useful for you US based folk) Plus there's a forum sponsor discount.
They also have aftermarket for £28.00 and US$47.60
Amazon seems to have plenty of aftermarket options, but couldn't find anything genuine, and Ebay was similar
Rimmerbros.co.uk have genuine for £55.83

Just to throw in some observations - I had a coil going out on me every so often. The same one, and I replaced it a couple of times. Then I read through some posts on the forum and saw some posts about spark plug gap affecting coil life. So I pulled my plugs and they were all a little big, especially the one with the problem with coils. I gapped them down to .035 - I know that is not recommended, but I've been happy ever since. I have the iridium plugs and I know they are supposed to be pre-gapped. Mine were all over .050. They do have about 20K miles on them and I figure they'll open up some with wear.

Those with # are same than "Genuine" but not in the orginal box. I have used * marked Lucas aftermarket coils without problems.

Amazon have Denso 673-6004 Ignition Coil for $30-$60 (depending on shop), says it fits Lincoln but not Jaguar.
Denso part finder says that part is for Lincoln LS 3.9L V8 but if I change to XJR X308, the catalog says "No Direct Ignition Coil (COP) results. We may not make this part for this application.".

Edit: Denso has something in their catalog for the XJR, listed under "Ignition wire set". I guess that's not the coil.

I agree - OEM,
I bought a set of OEM coils (2 pin) from Fleebay -- they looked like crap, obviously fakes, I fitted them - did not even drive the car with them fitted, misfires all over the place.

My colleague fitted aftermarket coils to his XJ6 two years ago. Since then, 5 out of 6 have failed. Clearly, there are some lousy quality coils around.
If you could get aftermarket ones that really are Denso, I'd say go for it. Just watch out for cheap ones / knockoffs.

Well thanks for all the input team Jaguar 308! I went to a link on the bottom of one of the threads for ignition coils and ordered OEM's. They called me back - out of stock, how about after markets? Declined. Went to Barratt and got OEM's. Not cheap, however I do believe you get what you pay for. All came in Jaguar packaging. Also threw in new plugs while I was there, and even though pre gaped I dug around in the tool box and found my gap tool from high school (not giving a year here as I do not want to date myself_LOL) and checked them. 7 of the 8 were good, the 8th was larger, so I gaped it down! Put them in and with the new coils, the car drives like a dream! Lots of power, sharp acceleration and gas mileage has improved! Just wanted to close the loop on what I started!
In order to get the car running I ended up buying an OEM one through the local Jaguar dealer. They were able to get one in the next day, and I got a bit of a discount, so not really complaining, even though it was $200, and Denso ones from SNG Barratt are more like $60 each.
The car runs beautifully again... so I'm tempted to just leave it like this. Not sure it's worth it to replace all of the other coils when they seem to be working perfectly.
At least if I do replace them in the future I know exactly where to get them from

I think I have posted this before in another thread, but I bought a duralast coil from autozone for my 99vdp a few years ago. I opened the box and it had a shiny new denso coil in the box. Lifetime warranty and was only $100 for one. Hopefully that is still the case!

I've had to replace 3 different coils over the last several years for my 2000 XJ8. Always used OEM from Gaudin Jaguar. Ordered online. They only sell genuine Jaguar parts since they are a dealer.
