Instrument Cluster Bulb Replacement, etc.
Well...working forward on getting used to my 2000 XJ8...and noted that a couple of light bulbs in the instrument cluster are long departed. As is one in the shift gate. And the cigarette lighter socket is dead...so can't power my XM receiver...anyway....
Online searching has not returned any valid info. Anyone have a replacement # (and suggestions as to whether or not this is a relatively simple fix)? Thinking it may be a standard GE part number, but, like everything else, want to make sure.
Will be working through an occasional P0357 code it seems to be throwing (which sends me into restricted performance...) from time to time; thinking the on-plug coil or connector may be (along with checking that the well is not oil filled...seems to be using a quart every 1-1.3K miles of highway driving....) in need of attention; maybe throw in a new set of plugs just to eliminate that potential issue.
Also dropping off at Flemington Foreign Car in central NJ this weekend for the wrenches there (owner was a former Jag mechanic) to go over her, do an oil change, coolant flush, replace the left rear muffler, align, etc.
Then to my body guy to respray the bumpers and remove some starting rust along the front of the right rear wheel arch at the bottom, a small, dime sized piece of rust at the lower corner of the rear window (I think every XJ I've looked at has an issue in those areas...at least here in the northeast)...and buff out the BRG paint, which looks pretty good for its age, all things considered.
Car has 105K, engine was replaced (need to suss out the date code to figure out whether it was pre '01 or ?) about 30K ago when previous owner's granddaughter roached it by driving with low coolant; tranny was done at the same time.
So...if anyone has any guidance re the bulb #, I'd be greatly appreciative!

Sounds like a nice ride!
LJA4390AA - Bulb with holder from the dealer. (Gaudin says the part was superseded by XR83865.) Probably worthwhile to change them all while you have the gauges out.

Hi Bryan,
Hopefully someone will be able to post photos and instructions for your X308, which is a little different from the XJ40/X300, but in case they're helpful, below are links to photos from our '93 showing how easy it is to remove the instrument cluster and change the bulbs. I assume the process on the X308 is similar, it's just a matter of removing the things that are in your way until you can pull the instrument pack.

One thing I learned when pricing bulbs from Jaguar for our '93 was that it was significantly less-expensive to purchase a good salvaged instrument cluster from eBay than it was to buy a full set of replacement bulbs from Jaguar! Jaguar wanted $12 - $15 per bulb, and I bought an entire cluster with a full set of working bulbs for $40 plus postage.
Another thing to consider is that it may be possible to replace the "grain-o'-wheat" style bulbs with inexpensive LEDs, reusing the original plastic bulb bases. Mike Stone at the Jag-Lovers forum did that on his '94 with good results:

Here is a weblink to a PDF file on the instrument cluster removal and its bulbs:
https://www.jaguarforums.com/forum/a...eplacement.pdf
Here are images of the instrument cluster removed:
First one image - 2 harness connected

next one shows it after removing the the locking harness connectors

last one is the back of the instrument cluster showing the bulbs placement

I replaced the 4 large bulbs (Type 194) for lighting the whole instrument cluster
The smaller ones are for odometer and warning lights
Removal anticlockwise 1/4 turn
amazon, very inexpensive, got the bulbs only. When you remove the cluster, use pliers to gently (I used a strong needle nose pliers), slowly twist the holder counter clockwise to release from the instrument cluster, then the bulb easily pulls out of the holder, push the new bulb in, and set the holder back on the cluster hole and twist clockwise
larger backlight bulbs that are out, a 158 or 194 will work, available at any auto parts store. The 194 is just slightly brighter, but also hotter.

Then off to the body guy/paintless dent removal shop to attend to a couple spots of rust, door dings, and a small crease on the front fender right at the bumper line.
That should hold me (being a brit car nut...MGs, Triumphs, and Lotuses have passed through my hands...) for a few weeks.
Thanks for the guidance, guys.
As I found it a bit difficult finding the right bulbs for the background illumination (bigger bulbs) with the given "Type 194"-name, I just want to make a little annotation here:
The specifications for the bulbs are 12V 3W. You can go e.g. for a OSRAM 2821.
The bulbs were declared as "parking lights", but are working very fine in my instrument cluster now...
And all four bulbs only cost me 3,20 € in my local DIY market.
I was just confused with these different declarations in the US and Europe (in my case Germany).
Hope I could help a little!

I did so in my Miata, and once you see that bright, super clean light, theres no going back. Buy your bulbs on Amazon, they have the best prices. IF I can be of any further help please let me know sir

Any tips on removing the connectors, even w/ pliers mine will not budge. I realize there's a locking feature but I can't get any movement @ all. I don't want to roughhouse & bend some pins.

Hi
I also had a problem removing the locking latches. I ended up with breaking the latch on the right side one (yellow one with black locking latch). I broke that latch when I tried to move it with a straight blade screw driver between the latch and the male connector.
I called our local Jaguar dealership service dept and asked how I could repair it. The manager said just to plug it in tightly and it would not be a problem.
It's been over 4 years now since I broke the latch and I never have any problems with the connector coming loose (even through its locking latch is broken).

Ok I finally got back to this, removed cluster replaced the 2 offending bulbs I hooked back up just to make sure they worked & nothing worked ?!
I'm wondering if the cluster has an internal fuse I may have tripped.

Issue resolved : I hadn't properly seated the multi-plugs & my replacement bulbs had some kind of coating on it's contacts (never seen that before).
Thought I'd reply to this thread instead of making a new one, hopefully there's still someone around to reply to this one!
I was looking to replace the bulbs as my speedometer light is not working, I thought there just was not a light but it's mroe likely that the bulb has blown.
Does anyone know if a typical t10 194 led from amazon would work fine as a replacement for these? thanks!

Hi XJ8Newbie,
Welcome to the Jaguar Forums! It's great to have you with us.
There is a lot of great information in the video at the link below. My recollection is that the X308 cluster is similar to that in the X100 as shown in the video:
Cheers,
Don

Brilliant thank you so much!
I was afraid that I'd have to look at extremely specific bulbs for the xj8 but if what you say is true then it shouldn't be too much of a hassle to find the right one for me.
Thanks for the video it's incredibly informative.

I’m in the UK (Like you, I think) and replaced my dash bulbs with LED’s from Classic Car LED’s: https://www.classiccarleds.co.uk/.
The stuff you can source from them is great and I’ve replaced lots of bulbs on my 2001 Super V8 and 1982 XJ6. They can sometimes be a little bright and they are sensitive to polarity so always test they light up before you bolt everything back together (ask me how I know that).
You can waste hours on that website, by the way….
